Q: Hi Rich. I just installed a SC71 parallel arm on a right-hand door, but I'm having trouble with the hold open nut (which faces up according to the instructions). My door opens just 90 degrees. I think the nut is adjusted for 100 or ? degrees. How do I adjust the nut so the door will stay open at 90 degrees? I tried moving it in either direction (after installation to the parallel arm bracket attached to the frame), but it doesn't budge. Kinda afraid to force it too much as bad things might happen. Thanks.
A: Is the arm attached as shown in step 5 frompage 4 here:

Is the door the same swing as shown on that page or the opposite swing?
Q: Thank you for your response. Yes, the door is the same swing (RH) as shown on that page. The main arm is slightly away from parallel after the hold-open arm was attached to it as shown in the picture. The hold open nut itself faces up per the rectangular box insert in Step 5 on Page 4. The nut on the bottom of the closer body was turned 45 degrees to the right per the instructions before the main arm was attached. The SC71 instructions are a little different: http://us.allegion.com/IRSTDocs/InstallInstructions/107385.pdf in regards to the main arm and how it attaches to the body (per the diagrams in the two circles with numbers 1 thru 4 imprinted on the round part of the bracket where it attaches to the body. I mounted it as per the "RH" circle. Anyway, is the actual nut on the hold-open arm adjustable??
A: Thanks for your full description. The actual nut on the arm i indeed adjustable and is the exact means by which you 'set' the degree of hold open. Is the arm seized at 90° right now? Assuming it is, and I have been in this situation countless times, I simply get a vice and a mallet and carefully tap the arm back straight. Please confirm this has resolved your situation.

Q: Thank you for your kind words that provided the encouragement I needed to try this. Yes, got it to work! With the door kept open to about 85 degrees (or so) with my step stool, and the door closer and arm all installed per the instructions, I first used my crescent wrench to LOOSEN the nut itself on the hold-open arm below where it attaches to the jam. The nut was VERY tight, so I applied slow and deliberate force and, indeed, it popped loose suddenly. With the door still in the same position (meaning a bit less than 90 degrees), I tightened the nut back to its original position. At this point (always making sure the wrench was still adjusted correctly so it would not slip), I then carefully tightened the nut a bit more by a very, very small fraction of a turn. I pushed the door open to its furthest position to test it, but the arm would still not hold the door open. I then tightened the nut another very small fraction of a turn and tested it again. It almost stayed open, but not quite. I tightened it yet a third time (again just a very, very small fraction of a turn) and this time the door stayed open. It would have been nice if the instructions included this procedure. Knowing what I know now, I think one can skip the step I used to loosen the nut first and just try to carefully tightening it a fraction of a turn (I recall trying that, though, and thought I was going to break the PA bracket off of the jam!). Thanks again for your help, Rich, and all the very best to you and yours. -Ken
