Q: What would cause a door closer to slam?
A: There are a few things that can cause a closer to slam.
-
The closer could be adjusted incorrectly. Turn all regulating screws clockwise until they stop. Then open each valve 1 and 1/2 turns. If the closer now seems to work, it can be adjusted to your closing preferences.
The closer may have lost some oil. If there is evidence that the closer has lost oil, nothing can be done to get it to work correctly. It will need to be replaced, or sent back to the factory for rebuild. Contact Sales Support for warranty/repair information.
There is internal damage or component failure. The closer will need to be replaced / repaired. Contact Sales Support for warranty/repair information.

Can it be used on the inside of an exterior door that swings out?
A: The part number that is in your image is a non handed door closer and can indeed be used on the interior side of an exterior door that swings out which is the ‘DS’ portion of the part number.

Q: Thank you for your reply. I’m using these interior on doors that swing out in opposite directions. Will they work on either one, or just the one that is hinged on the right?
A: Your Dor-o-matic SC81 series door closer will work on either left hand reverse or right hand reverse doors. The door closer body and the ‘DS’ arm that you have are non handed and universal can terms of the handing.
