Q: This is what I have. I have an older house that I’m remodeling. I used pre hung doors with 3.5” 3 screw hinges with a 5/8 radius corner. The trim around the door (used to match the rest of the house) is too wide for the standard hinge. The barrel of the hinge does not clear the trim of the door. I also have to mortise the trim so the hinge would sit flat. After a test fitting, I see I will have to pull the hinge out to allow the door to fully rotate without hitting the trim. That would leave a space in the door frame mortise and a 2 of the screws would end up in the trim or the crack between the frame and the trim. What I’m looking for is a wide throw, 3.5” 3 screw hinge, with 5/8 radius corner, hopefully in a brushed or satin nickel finish. Thanks.

Q: need a 4X8 wide throw hinge in stainless, ball bearing, with a hinge pin set screw, I am in Los Angeles and need 4 hinges.....we have a bit of felxibility, becasue we have not built the doors yet
A: Very interesting request.
Ball Bearing is no problem
Stainless base material is no problem
4 x 8 would need to be 4 1/2" x 8"
But otherwise the hinge is here:

Except that we need to specify the NRP (non-removable hinge pin).
Does this hinge look like it might work?

Q: Hello, I'm looking for wide throw hinges with the following specifications: - Stainless Steel - Five Knuckles - Ball Bearing - 4" x 5" I was wondering if you have anything in stock that would meet those criteria. I know that Bommer, Hager and Stanley all have hinges with those specifications but I would need them urgently so I would like to order based on the availability (and price) Thanks
A: Sure thing - the hinge you want is here:
https://absupply.net/bommer-bb5012-405-4x5in-wide-throw-hinge-full-mortise-standard-weight-ball-bearing-stainless-steel-base-27601.aspx
But it is both made to order with a 4 - week lead time with no option to improve this. I have 4 x 5 in stock that you can use as a tempory while you wait for the correct items to ship.

Q: Hi, I saw richard howard’s youtube clip. I am looking for a wide throw hinge for a residential indoor door. I want the door to swing open 180 degrees, but there is a ¾”stone tile and a 1”corner piece that is blocking its way (see attached). Ideally, I would like to use the existing door cut out and screw holes, but if not avail, I can settle with whatever works. specs follow: 3½” ¼” Round corners 3 hole 6” wide brushed nickel or similar looking metal material Can you give me a quote for one set of 3 pieces? If you have a better idea, please advise. Thanks.
Revision: Width to be changed from 6”down to 4.5”
A: We can do 5" wide - would that work?

Q: I have a 3/4" interior shutter that will be mounted on the inside reveal of the window. Because of mouldings and panels it would need to clear almost 4 1/2" in order for the shutter to be flush to wall. Do you have a hinge that would be appropriate for this? Thanks for the help.
A: While we do have wide throuw hinges that will allow this condition to work - the problem is the 3/4" shutter thickness as a standard hinge woul dneed a thickness closer to 1 3/8" so that the locations where the hinge screws lay. Please email me a plan view type sketch and I will speak to a custom fabricator we work with and advise the feasibility of custom manufacturing these hinges (a quantity and finish as well please).
Q: Hi, I saw your video on Youtube and am very interested in your products! I have a set of double doors with a thick casing that I would like to open to 180 degrees. On one side of the door frame there is a bump out which gives the door a total inset of 2 inches. On the other side of the door frame there is a thick casing that protrudes 1 inch from the wall. The doors are standard interior hollow-core doors. Based on your video, I assume that I need 2, 3 inch high hinges on each door but 2 different widths to account for the different inset thicknesses. I am looking for a primed finish. Can you please make a recommendation about the hinges I need and provide pricing including the cost of shipping to Canada? Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon, Ehren
A: How thick are the doors?
Q: Thank you for your response! The doors measure 3/8 in thick. Does the recommended product still work best? Does the product come with a 5/8 in radius corner?
A: Please confirm your doors are 3/8" thick.
Q: Hi, Yes the doors are 3/8" thick.
A: Again you arre saying your doors are 3/8" thick ( .375" thick ). Are you positive you are not intending to say 1-3/8" thick ( 1.375" thick ). Please confirm once last time. If indeed 3/8" thick, I am afraid I will not have a wide throw hinge to suggest -
Q: Hi, Thank you for your patience! Yes in fact the doors are 1-3/8" thick. We use the metric system here so I apologize for the error. Any recomendations?
A: For a 1.375" thick door, a 3.5" tall hinge would work swell. We can do 5" wide and accommodate the 1/4" radius corner as specified -

Q: Hi, Thank you for the information! Can you confirm that a 5" wide hinge is compatable with my application since I am looking for enough clearance to provide me with the space I need for the doors to open fully. The door is recessed by 2" due to a bump-out. Once you confirm, please let me know how I can go about ordering 4 hinges each with a 1/4" radius corner. Thank you again for your help! EHREN

Q: Hi, Thank you for offering to help! While I am not clear on the terminology you're asking me to specify, as mentioned in all of the previous emails I sent over the past week, the door is set into the wall by 2" and I need to clear that distance when opening to 180 degrees. Using this information, I need help determining what inset and clearance i need to consider. As you helped me determine in previous emails, the door thickness is 1-3/8" thick. The hinge is 1/4" from the edge of the door (perhaps this is the backset?). Just to remind you again, I would like 4 primed hinges with a 1/4" radius corners. Can you please recommend a specific hinge and show me exactly how to order it? Thank you again for your help with this and I look forward to ordering the hinges that I require!
A: Thank you for your email.
When you state:
I need help determining what inset and clearance i need to consider.
I must ask if you have reviewed the previously supplied link to the formula?
Door Thickness
- Backset
x 2
+ Clearance Required
+ Inset (if any)
= Hinge Width (if not a standard width, use the next larger standard width)
The formula, based on the information you have provided to date, and reviewing the previously supplied link to the formula we use, I have:
Backset = .25"
Inset = 2"
Required Clearance = 0" (are you sure - please double check)
Door Thickness = 1.375"
We arrive at a width of 4.25" and per the formula for Hinge Width (if not a standard width, use the next larger standard width), we arrive at 5" wide.
Based on your scrutiny on my conclusion, are you in agreement that a 3-1/2 x 5 wide throw hinge will suit your requirements?

Q: I have a Pella clad architect series outswing door and the door slab hits it's own jamb cladding. The cladding sticks out 1 1/16" past the slab. I am looking each door has 4 hinges and I am looking for wide throw hinges that will allow the door to swing open 180 degrees. Because they are outswing I need them to have non- removable pins. The hinges are 4 1/2" tall x 2" wide. They have radius corners.
A: When your current hinge is fully open, what is the overall width?

Door currently opens 90 degrees due to jam protruding about 2 inches beyond hinge axis of rotation. Length of hinge on jam is 4.25" and sits on top of jam, while the side that attaches to the door is 3.875" and is inset into door. Hopefully you can come up with replacement hinges that will permit a 180 degree openning. The Jam/Door interface is more correctly depicted in Detail "A". As you cam see there is no more door available to reduce the backset - you run unto the jam - which is actually a metal frame.
Do you do custom hinges? I await your response. Thanks Sal
A: Okay - I am not following that and do not see how changing the backset matters or alters the arc as only the vertical axis of pivot (its location specifically) has potential to affect that, but the issue is the wide throw hinges I have would not work on a 3/4" backset as the template here illustrates:
Download File
is your backset at 3/4" a fixed value or can it be modified to 1/4?
Q: Cannot modify to 1/4" as the outer edge of door is a complex geometry that engages with a weather tight frame
A: I do not have the ability to economically produce custom hinges for your application - I wish I could help -
If cost was not object - yes we have a horse in this race - but that last time I quote a custom widethrow hinges the per hinge cost was north of a grand each
I would be less costly to replace the door with a unit that will sit inside the opening.
Q: one last shot - How about a blank wide throw -( ie no holes) that I could have machined locally? See drawing here:
View Image
That said, since I am planning on some local fabricating being done the 4.25" length (and 6.5" throw) is also really a min dimension. Regarding the "offset" - the .125" is desirable not mandatory. The material is non-ferrous but don't let that deter you - steel will be fine, and possibly better.
A: I have checked on a full mortise wide throw in a 4-1/2 x 7
with 1 - leaf with zero swag and the other leaf with a full mortise swag.
A heavy duty BB5014-457 has a standard .with a full swage on one leaf and a standard swage on the other leaf will only provide a .316 offset.
The BB5014-457 with a standard swage with provide a .242 offset as shown by the sketch a .250 offset is needed.as seen here:
View Image
can only be prime finished if they have no holes. Therefore we are left with the Bommer BB5090-457-600 with special swage one leaf and no screw holes both leaves - prime coat finish only per the above referred to drawing.
Q: I need to digest this. It started out (at least in my head) as a $100 project and has now ballooned. I guess I gotta decide if it's worth 6 times as much + local machining costs to have doors open wider.......unless your guy could include the machining. What do you think based on your familiarity with the hinges.
A: We can perform the drilling / countersinking of holes for hinge screws with an additional charge. Send me a drawing and I will have the hinge quote modified to incorporate the additional work.
Otherwise is there a specific question at this time?
Q: No additional questions at this time. I need to think further outside the box prior to making a commitment. I will retain your contact info and let you know when I land Thanx for your help Sal
A: Thank you for your response and feedback on this job and I stand ready to assist on this or future potential projects.

Q: Richard, I think 4x6 with bearings is what I need. What's the price for three? Are the pins removable?
A: The 4 x 6 removable pin ball bearing hinge in satin chrome is the Bommer BB5010-406-652 Ball Bearing-5 Knuckle-Full Mortise-Wide Throw-Steel Base-4" x 6" Hinge-Removable Pin-Satin Chrome as seen here:

Q: Client is looking for 10" wide throw (4", 4.5", 5") X 10" Full Mortise 13/4" Solid Core 32"

Can you make a 5 x 8 work for your application? this size is typically a stock size for us.

Q: I had my foreman take 2 pairs of wide throw 4-1/2” hinges to a welder. We cut the ends off of both to extend the dimensions, and welded the pieces together to make the hinge. Total cost of welding was $100/hinge (3 hinges for the door). Works great. Thanks for looking into my problem in the first palce.

A: Thats Moxie!
That's awesome and I greatly appreciate you sending the photographs.
Perhaps the next time you get into a job like that, order yourself the hinges but in a full surface version so that there is no swag on the hinge having the effect that will allow you to sidestep the shim you had to put behind the hinge. you can do a double mortise to account for the lack of swag.
Thank you very much again for sharing.
Q: Hello, I saw your video about wide throw hinges on YouTube. I have a round top entryway, and I think the storm door needs some wide throw hinges to open further and clear the surrounding brick, but I’m not sure how wide they should be. Can you help figure that out?
A: Yes I can - the formula to determine the width of the hinge is as follows:
(DT-HB)*2+I+C
DT = Door Thickness
HB = Hinge Backset
I = Inset
C = Clearance
Then round up to the next commercially available size.
Q: I bought 1 3/4 offset hinge strap and when I put the shutter in the window and laid the strap against the shutter and when I tried to put the pintel on the brick,, it was an inch away from hitting the brick. If I laid the pintel against the brick the strap would not lay flush against the shutter. Please help!
A: I would be happy to help - can you please include photographs of the hinge, the brick wall and the shutter?
Q: im builindg a slat wall design with a closet door, door needs to swing out but cant figure out how to clear 1 1/2" slats ive applied to wall and door, any thoughts on hinges i could use to accomplish this? ideally would like the door to be hidden and hardware not visible, door only needs to open to 90 degrees. door is 1 3/4 thick flush mount with 1 1/2" vertical slats nailed to face and wall with 1/2" spacers.
A: Because you're slatwall is likely made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) there is no hint that you can mortise directly to it. This leaves your options at either wide throw hinges or pivot hardware. Neither are concealed except that pivots would be considered slightly more concealed than hinges however given the cost of pivot hardware I would think hinges would be the reasonable solution.
We do keep in stock wide throw hinges that would work for the thickness of the applied material and they start at about $62 per hinge.
Q: Thank you so much for the answer how quickly you responded. So the door will be solid core and the slate are solid pine, would that make a difference, the slats are 3/4 wide by 1 1/2 deep and will be adhered with glue and finishing nails. Here is a picture of what we are going for:
Download File
A: I don't do not believe a wide throw hinge would be your best option as it is not going to provide you a concealed type of look.
You ought to be able to successfully install the Soss line of concealed hinges for your application.
Please provide me with a detailed cross section of your jamb, showing the applied trim on both the face of the wall and the face of the door. I will then use this information to confirm to you that the sauce hinges not only compatible but make a specific product recommendation for a part number.
Q: Do you have self closing wide throw hinges? Or other suggestions for a self closing door hardware? Thanks, Dan
A: While I can say with confidence there are no wide throw self closing hinges - would you please give me a full narrative and feel free to include photographs of your application.
Q: I’ve built a slat wall with hidden door using your wide throw hinges to give the proper clearance. But as u can see it doesn’t close/stay closed so I’m trying to figure out a way to have it stay flush when there isn’t a door knob or latch. Make sense? Any suggestions? Photos here:

or touch latch such as the Ives CL12 as seen here:

or even a gate spring, possibly two, such as the Bommer 2440-601 12-3/4in Auxiliary Spring-Wrought Steel Heads-Bright Black Japanned as seen here:

would do the trick.
Q: I am building a pair of white oak exterior doors that require wide throw hinges that are at least 10 inches wide. My client would also like them to be heavy weight ball bearing type. I noticed that wherever I look the largest wide throw hinges that are readily available seem to top out at a size of 5" x 8". Then while browsing around on the net last night, I found a wide throw hinge that was 6" x 12". It is the Hager WTBB11996123A. This is the closest thing I can find even though it is a little larger than the 10" wide hinge I was looking for, but it would work. I would just have to finish the hinge as the details of this hinge state that it is unlacquered brass. My client would like the hinge to be an oil rubbed bronze finish, or something similar. Do you know of a wide throw hinge that is available in a 10" or wider width and preferably in an oil rubbed bronze finish? I am going to need at least 3 of these hinges for the left hand door, possibly a total of 6 hinges if the client wants wide throw hinges on the right hand door to match the left hand door. These doors are going in a large post and beam home and the left hand door has to open next to one of the posts...hence, the wide throw hinge requirement. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. I watched one of your YouTube videos last night and it seems like if anyone would know the answer to my question it would be Architectural Builders Supply! Please quote prices on whatever you find as I will have to give my client options...if there are any for them to choose from.
A: Please tell me, out of professional curiosity, how you have concluded that 10” wide is the requirement. Please feel free to include sketches and photographs supporting the conclusion on the hinge width.
Regarding the Hager hinge you located, please send me a link to that page as well.
Q: Thanks for your quick reply! The determination of a 10" wide hinge was from the fact that the existing door that I will be replacing is currently mounted on a 10" wide hinge. Click the following links to see a series of photos showing the current hinge being used:

The hinges shown in those photos were custom fabricated by the home builder about 10 years ago, but they are kind of flimsy and the homeowner has hired me to build new doors and replace the hinges with something more robust. They would prefer a hinge where the hinge leaf is somewhere close to 1/4" thick. They also expressed an interest in having the doors themselves be thicker as well. As with things I have built for this client in the past, they tend to like things to be heavy and overbuilt. Here is a link to where I found the listing of the Hager WTBB11996123A hinges:

Let me know what you find out. Thanks, Rob
A: Rob - thank you for the photos and bringing me into the conversation. A couple questions:
What thickness doors does your client wish to make the new doors and will this greater thickness be a problem in regards to the frame whose rabbet is meant for 1-3/4" door thickness and also how that will impact reusing the existing locksets? As the thickness increases we would need consider how that impacts the required overall hinge width as well. Please advise the dimension between the lines as seen here:View Image
Q: Hi Richard, Thank you for speaking with me today. As discussed, I am looking for a hinge that will allow a door to be flush when in the closed position AND flush when in the open position. A note: the door is to a basement so if the hinge was visible from the back side when the door is in the closed position it would not be an issue. If you have any ideas on a hinge that will work for this application I would appreciate it. I have a sketch as seen here:
Download File
showing the concept for your review. The doors and the frame will be wood.
Thanks
A: An extremely easy problem to solve. 19’th century tech. What you have are called pocket doors (there are two types of pockets doors, those that slide into a wall and those that swing to become flush with the wall. What you want is called a "Harmon Hinge" as seen here:
Download File
We stock a pocket door hinge Dorma 75523 Pocket Pivot Hinge
as seen here:

I am reasonably familiar with these hinges, their the application, prepping the doors and frames for the etc. Feel free to follow up with any questions you might have.
*PS: as an aside a "swing clear" hinge will also perform this task albeit less elegantly such as the Stanley CB248 4.5 26D
as seen here:
Q: Thank you for this information. I had seen these hinges in my wanderings. Just to confirm, when this hinge is in the open position and the door is nested in the pocket you will be able to see the hinge yes? If so, is there a hinge option that you know of where you would not see the hinge in the closed position from the outside OR in the open position. It would be ok to see the hinge from the back sdie as it is the basement stair and no one would really ever be down there with the door closed. Thoughts?
A: Any hinge will be visible to a certain degree when the door is opened. You could consider a full surface swing clear pin and barrel hinge such as the Markar FS/SC309 as seen on page 39 of the manufacturers catalog as seen here:
Download File
Having custom, one off, pivots made would be an idea to pursue once the idea was created in AutoCad.
Finally a slip in hinge would meet this requirement if it was a steel or aluminum door and frame such as the Bommer 5050-450G2-652 4.5x4.5in Slip In Hinge-Full Mortise-Standard Weight-Plain Bearing-Steel Base-Satin Chrome Plated
as seen here:
assuming we could convince a manufacturer to make a slip in in a swing clear version.
Assuming these are non-fire rated doors.
