Q: What is this plastic clip on the ND chassis?
A: On August 15, 2012 Schlage began shipping ND-Series locks with a hassle free clip to aid with the installation of the anti-rotation plate. This feature has been added to the hub to keep the anti-rotation plate in place while the inside spring cage assembly is installed.
Q: How long is the ND tailpiece for a thick door?
A: Schlage ND-Series tailpieces for extended doors are available by only two means, but are not available to order separately.
If an extended tailpiece is needed, then a complete lock will need to be ordered for the extended door.
If a lock was ordered for an extended door but a tailpiece was not shipped, damaged, or incorrect then contact the RMA group to have a replacement sent.Q: Why can't I lock my AL53 or ND53 lock with a key?
A: The AL53 and ND53, specifically the 53 function, is not designed to be locked from the outside with a key.
Key operation:
When the button is pushed then the key will unlock the outside lever.
When the button is pushed and turned the the key will only retract the latch allowing ingress but the outside lever stays locked. Q: Is there an exit lock offered in the ND series?
A: The ND12 and ND25 are both exit locks.
ND12
Outside lever always fixed. Inside
lever always unlocked for immediate
egress.
ND25
Blank plate outside. Inside lever Q: Is the latch sold separate on the ND series?
A: Latches are sold separately, see current Pricebook for part numbers.
Q: What is the part number for a key in lever tailpiece for the ND lock?
A: For modular designs:
All functions except ND85 the tailpiece part number is N523-022.
The ND85 tailpiece part number is N523-123.
For non-modular designs:
All functions except ND85 the tailpiece part number is N523-023 for Classic cylinders and N523-022 for Everest/Primus cylinders.
The ND85 tailpiece part number is N523-123. Q: Are there parts available for the old D lever locks?
A: The ‘D’ Series lever locks, which I first became aware of right about the time of the passing of ADA, was discontinued in October 2003 and there are no parts available.
Q: Does an ND50 or ND53 unlock when closing the door?
A: Both the ND50 and ND53 will not unlock when the door is shut. The only way to pop the button is by turning the key on the outside or the lever on the inside.
Occasionally customers will complain that the button does pop out when the latch is depressed. A common mistake is that they test the lock out of the door and depress the slide (see figure below), thinking that they are simulating the door shutting- when in fact they are simulating the inside lever turning.

The proper way to test is to install a latch on the chassis and depress the latchbolt.
This is also known as "Non-Restoring" regarding the function of the latch when the button, say on an office function, stays depressed.
Q: How is the Schlage ND lock installed?
A: Select the appropriate installation instructions below for step-by-step guidance on how to install a Schlage ND lock as seen here:

Q: Why does my key cylinder spin and not lock or unlock the ND?
A: The keycam may have failed, example here, the latest design keycam can be easily identified as the colored changed to black.
Replace either the keycam or chassis as needed to resolve this issue.
This could also happen if the tailpiece isnt installed in a KIL, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder. The FSIC driver also could have come loose from the core in the spindle.
Q: Are Interchangeable cores compatible industry wide?
A: There are two types of interchangeable cores:
Full size interchangeable cores (FSIC)
Also known as Large Format Interchangeable Cored (LFIC)
Each manufactures FSIC cores are specific to that manufacture
These cores differ dimensionally
i.e. You can not install a Schlage FSIC into another manufacturers FSIC prep
Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC).
These cores are dimensionally similar and will install into other manufacturers SFIC prep
Q: What are the new announced ND-Series features?
A: ND-series locks manufactured on or after January 30, 2017 will ship with an improved spring cage and matching lever design. The design features are noted below. Because of this change, there are several components that need to be considered (spring cage, lever, plunger and button) when replacing parts from locks that have shipped prior to January 30, 2017. Schlages mechanical lock technical support group can assist you with finding the correct parts.
These improvements are designed to:
Prevent Access
Improve lever droop and wobble
Facilitate installation
Increase Non-Schlage cylinder options
Allow one spring cage for multiple cylinder optionsSchematic as seen here:
