Q: Hi Richard, I have the E-series lock and it works ok but the friction after many attempts to maintain have improved how it operates, but at this stage the friction in the delatch part driving the strike has worsened to the point that my wife can not open without struggle and pain. Are there any other locks that have the same delatch to be able to buy a new lock now and simply use rob the delatch part only? Thanks for you help as we have had this lock for many years after buying it 20+ years ago and we love it for same reasons you described. Interestingly…. My wife wants to buy a new lockset but when I told her about the functionality that wont be the same, she suddenly decided she did not want to buy new… LOL.. Then she suddenly appreciated that value of the lockset we bought many years ago. I am an engineer and very good in dealing with these repairs and hardware. Also, I installed this set many many years ago when the door was new… So my goal is to simply find parts that can replace and make it work well again to keep my wife happy… I appreciate your advice. Thanks, Darrell
A: I do believe that I can help - please reply to this email with a photograph of the item that you are referring to that you believed to be contributing to the failure of the door hardware. When you say “delatch” I expect that you are saying “deadlatch” or “latchbolt”.
Q: Hello Richard, Thanks for this email and sorry for slow reply. I have put the lockset back together and did not take a picture. Also… I did mean to say “deadlatch and not “delatch.” However, the problem appears that it may be in the mechanism on back side of the interior door knob. As the knob is turned to open the door in normal use it has a point where friction level is so high that my daughters in the 20s are not able to open the door from the inside at times. In case it is helpful to note, opening from the outside is easy with the lever, while using the inside knob is not. I have to imagine that 20 years of wear since we put it in when new has created a wear point on the mechanism. Because I have taken the lockset apart multiple times to try and improve its operation with cleaning and lubricant over the past couple years and it has not allowed for improvement (either immediate or over several days of use) I have to assume the wear has caused a specific point of friction in the movements of parts. Do the symptoms I’ve described seem to typical of problem and/or suggest a likely part needed? If you might be able to call to discuss, I would very much appreciate that when convenient for you. Or, I would be very happy to call on the number below with hopes that timing is ok for you. Thanks, again!!
