A: Lon - thank you for the question. The only serviceable item from the Pemko line of wood adjustable top residential thresholds is the Vinyl Moisture Barrier as seem here:

Q: Two more questions please: 1. Is the replacement moisture barrier pressed in from the top or does it need to be slid in from the side? 2. If I purchase two complete Pemko 95518AW thresholds can I remove the top oak strip and reinstall in existing Pemko thresholds or does the complete old unit need to be removed and replaced? Thank you for your expertise. Lon
A: Thank you for the question regarding the replacement of the vinyl moisture barrier.
Indeed the replacement moisture barrier is installed by pressing it into the top of the threshold and does not require to be slid in from the side.
Regarding purchasing new thresholds with the intent of removing or cannibalizing those thresholds to extract specific pieces from them and install into new thresholds, I can only ask that you imagine that I have gotten this question countless times. Naturally I've spoken to the manufacturer regarding this possibility on several different occasions and they have always told me that this is not possible . The reason it is not possible is because the adjusting nuts do not simply unthread or come apart and as a result of the manufacturing process are installed in such a way that they cannot be removed without destroying the adjusting nuts and the wood adjustable top assembly itself.
Having said that, I have been told by several individuals that they have successfully removed pieces from new thresholds and install them into existing thresholds. After learning this I have always pressed the client for additional information, steps they took and even proof via photographs to confirm that this has been possible. However to date no one has come forward and provided evidence of how this has been done.
In the light of this I can only tell you what the manufacturer says, and that is it is not possible to remove pieces from new thresholds and install them into existing thresholds.
I understand the construction of wood frames with wood or possibly metal clad or even fiberglass type doors. The threshold, especially residential adjustable top thresholds like these, are used as structural members of the wood frame when the frame is being built. They are usually stapled or screwed in through the back side of the gym making removing them once the unit is installed all but impossible . I should not say or use the word impossible, but I would say extremely difficult and a very distasteful concept to consider.
If there's anything else that we can help and assist in making this project any less painful moving forward, please know that we are here to help.
Q: A follow-up question to your last response on the Pemko 95518 Dw adj. threshold and the ability to canabalize parts.... the adjustable screw stripped. I'm not sure how long ago you posted your previous response but has anyone been able to show you proof via photos or explained the steps taken to fix/replace the adj. screw. Thank you for any assistance or insight you can offer.
A: I have indeed had a couple of individuals claim that they have been able to do it but have deferred when asked to provide evidence of success. It is important to note that the official statement from the manufacturer is that these items cannot be removed, serviced or replaced.
Q: Richard, I'm trying to find a replacement Stanley Oak Sill insert with screws for my 36" Stanley Steel door from the late 80's. I have 4 of these doors and I've replaced the magnetic weatherstripping on the jambs and need to replace the Oak insert adjacent to the anodized bronze sill plate. The measurements for the Oak insert is are 7-5/8" wide X 1-1/2" wide on the top X 9/16" high and bottom measures 1-3/8" wide below the top profile edges. The inside channel on the bottom is 7/8" wide. There is a small profile running horizontally along the top on each edge as you can see in the pictures I've provided. Would you happen to know of a source to get a replacement Oak Insert that is a match for my insert? Let me know if these photos here:

explain things okay Thanks, Mike S
A: I do indeed get this question fairly often. From the manufacturers I deal with they do not provide that wooden insert as a standalone product. In fact I have never heard of a company that does. I have had one client told me he successfully made one in his wood shop and my only suggestion is to sell you the entire new Pemko 95518DW 36.5 in. Dark Bronze Anodized Aluminum Adjustable Oak Top Sill Residential Threshold

and then the Pemko EXT2D 40in. Dark Bronze Anodized Aluminum Sill Extender Residential Threshold
