step 3 to be sure all parts are installed on the trim correctly, even if the trim was received in the proper hand.
If the 912L is used with a rim device, check to make sure device template was correctly followed. The 912L does not retract the latch bolt all the way into the case. It will be out about 1/16" which will still clear the strike if the template was followed.
Also, check tail piece length, if door is not exactly 1 3/4", it is possible the tailpiece on the trim will project too far into the case and cause an issue with the latch retracting (applies to devices shipped any time).
