What is the little tab for that sticks out of the end opposite the bolt

Questions and Answers
Q: Thanks for the video. As I was changing the lock the shutter closed and I cannot open it. Is there a secret to opening the shutter guard? Thanks.
A: There should be a tab sticking out of the curved end of the lock. That is the release for the shutter bar.

Q: Hi Richard. I was attempting to reinstall the ILCO 530-53-41 and a couple of the inside parts fell out. do you have a schematic of how I need to put back together? It is a very old lock that I was trying to fix. email would be great. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
A: If I had anything that would help, I would certainly send it to you. The old 530 jimmy proof was made by a sister company in Canada. That part of the company closed and I re-sourced from China somewhere around 2002. I don't have prints or an exploded view of either manufacturers model.

Q: Hi - what is the little tab for that sticks out of the end opposite the bolt? Thanks for the video, by the way!
A: The item you refer to is called the shutter and it's purpose is the close off the opening access to the rim cylinder tailpiece. The video as seen here will better fully demonstrate this answer:

Q: I have the same lock but it's by kwikset model number U-9970. I was hoping that you would show the installation of this lock with the key access from the other side of the door! Can you make a "How To" video Please? I can and will figure it out eventually on my own but before I Mess up the front door, would be nice to watch it first! LOL! Thanks!?
A: I have not personally created an installation video for a surface mounted vertical style Rim mounted deadbolt.

Having said that I've done some research on the part number that you have provided and it appears to be a low cost version of the original lock manufactured by Segal and has been in continuous manufacturing for several decades.

The interesting thing about the part number that you referred to and the Segal lock that I refer to is that they are owned by the same company called Prime-line.

Prime-line has produced a video regarding the installation of their single-brand lock, which is known as the top-quality lock or the name most synonymous with this specific type of lock , meaning that you could almost refer to the lock as a "Segal" Lock .

A link to the video that I referred to is here :

Q: I removed my dead bolt to paint my door. The shutter tab will not slide in to allow for reinstall. Any suggestions? Joe M
A: I would carefully remove the rear cover and visually inspect the shutter area. Must just be a "jamb" of some sort.
Q: Hi, I am a retiree who has been forced to become a DIYer thanks to less-than-excellent financial planning! My front door lock has recently stopped locking. The key only turns partway in the lock. With the help of the 'net, I've diagnosed this as a broken cylinder. I've included a couple of pictures and some tech info in this email. Some questions: (1) Have I diagnosed the issue correctly? Is it a broken cylinder? (2) Do you carry a replacement cylinder and 4 keys? How much would they cost? and (3) with the help of one of your videos on YOUTUBE, do you think that I could replace the cylinder myself? If 'yes', which video(s)? (4) Would it be easier to replace some part other than the cylinder? If 'yes', how much would that part and 4 keys cost? Here's the tech stuff: (1) the outside lock component where you put the key in is: 1 1/4" in diameter. (2) The circle of metal which surrounds #1 is 1 3/4" in diameter. (3) The door itself is 1 11/16" thick. (4) The brand of the lock set is Ilco. I will greatly appreciate any help/information that you can give me. Photos as seen here:

Thank you.

A: It is hard to determine the cylinder is causing the lock to not work correctly and my guess is that it is likely the lock bodies internal components.

Regardless which of the failed components is causing the error, the lock must be removed from the door and inspected. Ae you comfortable removing the lock from the door?

Q: To lock my door I have to turn the mechanism counter clockwise but I want to turn it clockwise to lock it. What do I have to do?
A: The short answer is that there is no way to alter the direction of rotation to lock the door - on the Kaba Ilco 530-53-41 Single Cylinder Jimmyproof Deadbolt Lock, Less Cylinder - Bronze Lacquer the direction of rotation to lock/secure the deadbolt will always be counterclockwise.
