Q: My question is.....how do you get the old one out? I bought a home and half the balls are missing....but the insert is still buried in the door. Thanks.

Q: So you would not recommend this for interior double french doors for say an office where you are trying to prevent a toddler from simply pushing the doors open? My french doors do not have any type of locking, only decorative handles.?
A: I would not recommend a Ball Catch from any manufacturer for the purpose of keeping a toddler from simply pushing the door open.
What works with success is installing a very small surface bolt at the top of the doors such as the
IVES 40 2" Concealed Screw Surface Bolt as seen here:

details how the Ives 345 is adjustable. The trick is to adjust the unit prior to installing it in the door, ie... to see how it adjusts, you must remove it first from the door.

Q: The ball popped out should we replace the entire plate??
A: Yes - if the ball portion of the latch has come out of its housing, a replacement would be needed.
