Q: Is the notch in the thread "normal" for this valve?
A: The cut in the threads is a safety feature of all extinguisher valves. The valve is required to be constructed that way. It insures that pressure will be relieved in a somewhat controlled manner through the threads in the event the valve is removed when the extinguisher is pressurized. Without that feature there is a much greater risk of personal injury if the valve is removed while the extinguisher is pressurized.

Q: What does the model number at the base of the valve reference? I have one that says model B-1.
A: The B-1 likely refers to the company who placed the order for them. For instance on our units we purchase these as Amerex part number 3090. We add an “A” to it for our part number.
