Q: Hello, Ii would like to use this lock on a brownstone condominium with multiple owners. Is this lock available as a storeroom lock, so that it won't be left unlocked with a twist of button, i.e., no privacy lock feature? Doug
A: Dog thank you for the email.
You're asking if you can take this Baldwin entry set and turned it into a function that would be always locked on the outside but more importantly be prevented from being turned into an unlocked state from the inside. And you are correct and calling that a storeroom lock that is indeed the proper term for the function that were describing.
Baldwin does not manufacture this type of lock as a storeroom. As you and I had previously discussed on the phone I felt it was possible to take a single dummy set, it would have to be a single dummy set to match a kid function, and use the closed knob from it meaning an app that does not have a hole on the inside of it to accommodate the from turn.
I explained on the telephone I have been able to with success in the past remove the interior door knob from the entrance function lock set the push turn button into a locked condition and then simply cut and grind the stem including the push turn button to allow clearance for me too then take the closed knob from the separate dummy set in literally install it covering up the remaining portions of the push turn knob button.
I have done this with success with other types of locks up. I have called Baldwin and ask them for their opinion regarding this. And while of course they were not able to tell me that I would have complete success doing it, they did indicate that they were unable to tell me that absolutely no I would be able to do it .
Having said all of this it would involve you ordering the complete entrance function of the Baldwin entry set that you want. It would also involve you buying it at a complete dummy set to match the insurance function.
I am confident that you will be able to make the modifications to turn the entrance function into a store room, but I am unable to provide you a guarantee of such.
We also discussed in our telephone conversation your need to have an electric strike work with all of your lock installation. You indicated that you had a Schlage entry grip sights installed on the door now and that entry groupset is comprised of a lowered some peace which is in effect a passage set and an upper deadbolt which is a traditional deadbolt.
Your locksmith told you that the electric strike and the Schlage entry get grips function were incompatible. If the locksmith is referring to the deadbolt portion I would agree with that. You painted the locksmith in a light that led me to believe you may not be getting the most direct answer and I have found that to be the case as well in certain situations. However it seems to me that you need to work with a locksmith is doing the installation work yourself is not within your skill-set.
Having said that our conversation led us to the potential solution of not purchasing the Baldwin material, but retaining the lower portion of your Schlage grip entrance at, and replacing the deadbolt with slaves be 250 series slam style deadbolt. This Lake B250 which is linked to below this answer, is in effect a deadbolt but it is a slam latch style deadbolt, is completely compatible with electric strikes and you will find them installed most commonly with electric strikes because they're used to date scenarios at the front of a multi-unit building, and will retain the original look of your grip handle.
Having said that operation will require a key to retract the latch bolt and then operation of the front piece with the opposite hand. Operation will also require the depressing of the fun peace even in the event when someone is being let in via the intercom and electric strike.
It seems to me that it might be easier to replace the deadbolt with the slam style deadbolt but as we discussed on the telephone, you will need to relocate the electric strike From Below where the funky / bolt is an up to where the deadbolt location would be.
Having said all of this you have a multi-unit building you have tenants that you basically need to prevent them from leaving the door and a state of being unlocked. That is all understood, but the question becomes how was the or what is the best way to approach to solving this problem.
Replacing the lock set with a Baldwin set and then modifying it in the way that I have outlined above is risky in the sense that none of the material is returnable and there is no guarantee that you'll be able to modify the entry set to make the clothes not fit over it.
Having said this it might be the smoothest way for you to use the slam style deadbolt in lieu of the original deadbolt from the grip handle, and either retain the original grip handle or simply remove it from the door and had to direct a decorative pull handle to the face of the door .
