A: I have recommended very short surface bolts to clients and relatives for the exact purpose of what you need to accomplish basically keeping a child or toddler from going through an opening and a typical example is there's a door in a kitchen or off the kitchen that happens to lead to the basement that door swings into the kitchen and that first step is down to a stair and then you've got twelve steps to get down to the floor so we certainly want to prevent a child from being able to pull that door open (which is quite easy to do especially when you have lever trim on the door in their hand strength is not sufficient yet enough to twist a knob by hanging on a lever by their weight alone and which would permit them to get the door open). Specifically in your installation you would use what we called the rim strike which is the strike that has the radius end that the factory calls “half moon”.

because you could install it without having the exterior thumb-turn which would normally be an interior thumb-turn and you can have a decorative cover over the keyhole and then an emergency key that would operate it so thatMay be unnecessarily inconvenient.

Finally you may also consider removing the passage or privacy set currently on the door and replacing it with a keyed lock until such a time that having it locked is no longer necessary.
