Questions and Answers
Q: Hello Rich, I am confused about how one correctly determines the correct length for special mounting posts (L583-….) for L Series Mortise Locksets. Does one order mounting post length based on the overall leaf thickness or based upon the longest dimension from face of leaf to centerline of lockset. For example, Door 108 is 2 3/16” overall thickness and Dimension from outside face to centerline of lockset is 1 5/16” and from inside face to centerline of lockset is 7/8’. I had listed L583-213 Mounting Posts but Schlage Tech Support indicated it should be L583-214 as for EO 2 ¼” …See attached summary of doors showing dimensions for each opening as seen here:

Secondly the original supplier ordered all of the locksets for standard 1 ¾” Leaf Thickness. Therefore all of the locksets were provided with 1 1/8” Cylinders… However the dimensions from Outside Face of Door Leafs to Centerline of Lockset for Doors 201, 203, 204, 208, 212 with L9080, L9071 Locksets are either 1 7/16” or 1 ¾” . So Schlage Tech Support has advised that we will need to order 1 ¾” long Cylinders to accommodate the extension. Trying to correct an order placed by another party is really challenging…! Any feedback appreciated Thanks,

A: When the lockset is installed equally within the thickness of the door the way to order the mounting post would be based on the overall door thickness.

When the lockset is not installed equally within the thickness of the door, it simply has to be called out. Here's a recent order where I had a similar instance and how I call it out to Yale when I ordered the locks originally:

Storeroom Mortise Lockset 8805RL x 2196 x 1-1/2 x 2160 x 1765.500 x KP3 x TB x R3 x [specify fastener package] x 2-1/4” door thickness where we have a 1/2” applied panel over an 1-3/4” thick door on secure* side where we are centering the lock on the 1-3/4” thick door portion x 2815 x 1-1/4 x 202 x Right Hand x BSP - Yale

I would use the same logic when I was ordering the mounting posts or the fasteners.

For door number 108 I think Schlage assumed that it was being equally centered on the door. Seeing the door is a LHR I would have ordered L283-215. I would have them ordered the L583-066 for the standard 1-3/4” thick door

Regarding the cylinders I would have ordered the length based on what sort of trim ring or cylinder collar (meaning how thick is it going to be) you were going to use. I like to take half of the thickness of the door and then deduct the 16th and make that my cylinder length and then add to it whatever my collar thickness would be (assuming the lock is centered in the thickness of the door. I do not believe using 1-3/4 length would have been the best option for either of these scenarios. What needs to be determined is how thick the cylinder collar or trim ring will be. If you are using the cylinder part number 30-001 it's going to come with the 36-083. I would allow an additional 3/16 for this compression ring. Having said that we get down into these odd fractional sizes when it comes to cylinders and +/- 1/16” would be okay to calculate as well but there are times when the perfect cylinder length requires that I make a custom cylinder length using the system as outlined in the product brochure here:

I'll start out with typical kaba ilco cylinders and then add the extensions. The scenario is you need a 3-inch long polished chrome schlage F keyway for a corbin russwin mortise cassette in 24 hours - the system will allow you to do it.

I agree - leave the hardware to the hardware experts or at least to a person who's going to question the application and ask questions, look at installation instructions and templates before pulling the trigger.

*The Door Hardware Institute defines the “secure” side of the door as the side that has the key cylinder and the “secured” side of the door as the opposite side of that. As an example if you have a right hand door from a hallway to a telecommunications room - the “secure” side is the hallway and the “secured” side is the telecommunications room.

Q: Thanks for the excellent information on the Mounting Posts and Cylinders .. I am still not clear on the mounting post length…understood on the condition where lockset is mounted in center of door thickness…we do not have that condition on any of these custom doors. Door 109 –L9070 –Door thickness is 2 3/16” , the dimension from Outside face to centerline of lock case is 1 5/16” and from Inside Face to centerline of lock case is 7/8” .. So per Dana’s comments this would be L9040 EO 2 ¼” and she advised to use L583-214 which is for 2 ¼” Door thickness. I will have Intellis, who placed the original order, order extra Mounting Posts inL583-213a nd L583-214 so we have options on hand As concerns Cylinders, the cylinders were provided with standard 36-083 Compression Ring and Spring So we have dimensions from outside face of Door of Centerline of Lock Case of either 1 7/16” or 1 ¾” to which we would add the 3/16” for the Compression Ring ….which yields 1 ¾” and 1 15/16” …. I think the best we can do is order the 1 ¾” cylinders for the five doors because there is no 1 15/16” cylinder option listed ..if those don’t work we can have Pasek correct in the field… We are not going to field modify cylinders ..but appreciate the information on the jig. Thanks again for the most helpful information.
