Questions and Answers
Q: I have a 1/4" thick stainless steel plate/cap mounted to a 1-1/4" pipe. I want to fasten the door stop to the 1/4" SS plate. What would you recommend: drill and tap the 1/4" SS plate for a #12-24 MS - or should I ask my structural engineer for a thicker cap plate 3/8" or 1/2" and drill and tap that for the #12-24 MS?
A: Yes I would recommend a drilling and tapping but certainly to a thicker plate - 1/2” would be my recommendation and would use a grade 9 bolt. I would also recommend using a bottoming tap and not piercing through the plate
Q: I suppose there is nothing prohibiting us from asking for a Grade 9 bolt be substituted for the #12-24 MS that comes with the RM851. If we suggest a bottoming tap, we'll need to specify a shorter bolt potentially so it can be fully tightened. could you explain the thinking behind the bottoming tap? looking at the technical drawing, I don't think they'll be able to tighten a bolt with a socket wrench...
A: I'm imagining that you were going to install this down onto a floor surface and I would prefer if the plate was not breached so as to give a theoretical pathway for moisture to seep underneath your plate.
