Q: Quick question. We close in the house next Thursday, and I was told that I should change the locks once if have possession of the house. Is this something I can purchase from the good people at AB Supply, or is it simply a trip to Home Depot? If its the latter, do you have any brand/type you'd suggest? I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

The reason for changing the locks is simply that anyone who has keys to the house obviously cannot get back in after closing (this you know) but the purpose of this is not to physically change all of the hardware but simply have a locksmith repin the existing cylinders.
This way you're not making an outrageously significant investment in physically purchasing all new locks when all you need to do is reset the combination of the existing cylinders.
It is very likely that I can personally handle the repinning all the existing locks however we need to know the type of locksets prior to making this commitment simply because the lock type you have I may not have the tools necessary to physically do the recombination of the existing cylinders. In short, this might be easy or this may not be easy.
The way to proceed is one of two ways:
- Email me photographs of all of the locks from both sides of the door and I can determine the make and model of the lock and then tell you if I can personally do the repinning at your location. The problem with this possibility is that you won't have access until after closing at which point you're either going to hear from me that I can do it or I can't (see #2 for "if I cant"). The problem with your scenario is that you will want to be able to make this happen immediately because you likely will not feel comfortable spending a night in the home knowing that there's a possibility for other keys to be existing that will operate the locks. In short I can't tell you if I can do it until I see the locks. This requirement may not elegantly dovetail with your schedule. Perhaps the owner will allow you to come by and take pictures of the lock sets prior to closing?
- If I am unable to perform the service because of a time constraint or the inability to work on the locksets that you have, you will simply call a locksmith and make arrangements for that person to do it. The first option is to physically remove the cylinders from the doors and take them all to the locksmith and wait in their shop while they perform this service. This would prove to be the least expensive path forward. Alternatively if that's not a possibility you will simply make arrangements for the locksmith to be at your location at a specific time on Thursday.
