Q: Hi, I had a question about the compatibility of two products you sell. Actually, what I'm really interested in in being able to use a schlage 5-pin SC keyway with a night latch & most night latches I see for sale come with a KW1 keyway by default.
I was actually confused a little bit on the night latch situation itself first. It seems like some latches have a triangular "deadbolt" allowing the door to just be closed to lock it, while others have a regular square/rectangular deadbolt requiring one to physically operate the bolt in order to lock it.
I was looking at the ILCO ones, I liked the 545-53-41, but it appeared to have a rectangular bolt, then I looked at the 220-53-41, and this looks to have the correct triangular bolt I was thinking of pairing them with the Kaba Ilco 605SC-04-41-KA, would that be compatible?
I watched all your videos on this subject on youtube btw, they were really helpful!
A: First there are deadbolts like the Kaba Ilco 545-53-41 as seen here:

Then threr are deadlatches such as the Kaba Ilco 220-53-41 Night Latch as seen here:

The important distinction is this:
Deadbolts are not self latching and must be manually relocked when the door is closed.
Deadlatches are always self latching (provided you have not engaged the hold back feature common to most rim mounted nightlatches) and will automatically relock when the door is pulled or pushed closed.

Is compatible with either lock, but wouls urge you to purchase the Kaba Ilco 7015SC8-04-KD as seen here:

As the 7015 is solid brass contruction (versus zinc die cast as the 605SC - you will thank me is 10 - years) which allows far higher level of perdicatable and reliable operation.
Q: I liked the 545-53 series of night latches more b/c it appears they don't have that lock that locks the deadbolt back (I'm trying to avoid user error where other people accidentally lock the bolt in the open position). Does there happen to be a night "latch" from ilco that doesn't have the "lock back" handle, so it can't be accidentally locked in the "back" position? After this - I think I have what I need, thanks for your help!
A: The Kaba 545-53 lockset do not feature a hold back as they are deadbolts, meaning the are either locked or unlocked and are changed between either state manually.
Regarding the night latch without a hold back, the answer is yes. the Kaba Ilco 220NHB-53-41 (the NHB stands for No Hold Back) and can be special ordered for you.

Q: Could I install a kwikset smartkey keyway on this lock
A: The short answer is no. You would need a Smartkey Rim Cylinder which Kwikset does not make. Having saig this, I can envision a way to possibly force this hybrid relationship using an exterior Kwikset Deadbolt Smartkey cylinder and then modifying the hub where the tailpiece is received in the lock body to accept the "D" shaped tailpiece from the Kwikset cylinder.
I have never performed this, but confident I could do so.
Q: I'd like to install this on a gate. The strike plate would go onto a 4x4 post. Can you recommend an extended lip strike plate compatible with this latch?
A: The Kaba Ilco 220-53-41 Night Latch with Kwikset Keyway - Bronze Lacquer is a rim lock and is installed when the inside between the face of the door and the frame is 0 or likely not to exceed 1/8”. Please send me a sketch of your application and I will review this further.

A: What you're referring to is a rim cylinder and this lock will accept any rim cylinder whether the typical garden-variety rim cylinder that would be included with a lock like this all the way up to very high security protected in patented keyways. As long as what you purchase for this from us is called a rim cylinder it will be compatible.
Q: Hello, So glad I found your store - I think it was via YouTube, trying to learn all the names of the types of locks (just moved into a 120-year-old building). There are 3 "doors" (old wooden gates, really) that have weird combinations of barrel bolts, pad locks, etc; they break and people just add new ones (tisc, tisc). The garage door (two doors that swing out) has an Ilco night latch, so I'd like to go with that, then take the cylinders of the new ones to the locksmith and have them key them all the same. Door #1 is the one I was asking the most about. Here's a sketch:

The door opens out and to the right, so I need to invert the latch on the lock body. The opening side is on a 4x4 post of the neighbor's fence, so I need a flat strike plate there. Based on the 1 7/8" dimension, I found that the Don-Jo 2-1/2" lengths might work. This particular door is outdoors and will get rained on (but it's San Francisco, so not a lot). Thank you! Emilio

I agree that you can use an extended lip strike, and while I would expect to have to do some modification to the strike to allow the last bolt from the night watch to enter - I would start with the Don-Jo MEST-125 Stainless Steel Mortise Extended Lip ANSI Strike as seen here:
