JL RHD-KIT-RETROSPR-G1 Shock and Spring Assembly
  • According to the manufacturer early in 2018 changed the design of JL Industries roof hatch. They will continue to offer the older style spring kits, however, there will be new ones. We are releasing the JL Industries RHD-KIT-RETROSPR-G1 which is the new "universal" retrofit spring kit that can be used on any old version roof hatches that Activar has sold. The intent is that this new kit will replace all the old spring kits including: RHGIZ-A004, RHGIZ-B004, RHGI-RETRO-1GH, RHGI-RETRO-A388-1-GH and is specifically designed for steel, 36" x 30" hatches. Other sizes will need a different spring combination, which we can provide. Please feel free to contact us with your non standard roof hatch size parts requirements.
  • The RHD-KIT-RETROSPR-G1 is specifically designed for the older RHGI-1 and RHG-1 models and has 2 nested spring assemblies. The steel, 36 x 30 lids are heavy, and need both spring assemblies with springs to properly lift and counterbalance the weight of the covers.

Questions and Answers
Q: It finally got warm enough today to put the new struts on our JL roof hatch, they went on OK but we are having issues now closing the hatch. It opens fine ( does appear to over extend ) but when you try to close it the shocks are in a bind until they get part way down. It seems to me that the tolerance between the inside and outside tube is too large causing it to bind on the way down. You can see when the hatch fully extended the shocks push out because of the clearance between the 2 tubes. Once you work the shocks back and forth coming down to release their bind at about 25% closed or past vertical it closes better but it still feel like they are binding. Could the springs be the wrong rate ( too stiff ) ??
A: Apply white lithium grease to the spring and the inside of the large tube in the outside of the smaller tube. I would apply three or four ounces to each tube as seen here:

The spring rate can't be the wrong as that rate is the smallest the manufacturer has ever produced.
