Q: Hi Richard, I saw your youtube channel and thought I would write to you for further advice. I have purchased a standard double bore front door and I want to put a roller latch on it as I want the ladder/h style door handles on the doors. I saw that you recommended the Ives RL30 for commercial applications which I am guessing would be good for a front door as well. Can this be mortised into a standard size round bore? Also, how do I fill up the bore hole once I put this type of latch into it? Look forward to receiving your advice. Thanks, Devina
A: A better choice would be the Ives RL32 as seen here:

and the template as seen here:

as the height of the latch body at 2-1/4" is al but surely what you already have on your pre-drilled door.
Filling in the holw drilled in the door is another problem altogether and short of simply blanking off the unused hole with a simply filler plate, there is no elegant way to close off a pre-drilled hole. You will want to select a door lock, or perhaps a set of custom fabricated escutcheon plates to both work with the locking hardware that will occupy one of the holdes and allow you a fairly decorative way to simply cover the extra hole.

Q: Would you use the RL30 on a small wood door that's 1-3/8" thick and has only 1-3/4" wide stiles? Sounds like the mortise depth would be VERY close to that 1-3/4" stile width but I'm not a mortise expert?
A: What is behind the 1-3/4" stile? Glass? Partical Core?
Q: It is glass behind the 1-3/4" stile
A: How heavy would you guess the door is?
Q: Probably 50-60 lbs. This latch is overkill for the door but I need to make sure my cats can't push it open so I want it to be overkill. Asking more from a mortise depth perspective.
A: First I would not suggest you mortise a door 1-3/4" (as indicated on the template) deep when you only have 1-3/4" stile thickness.
As a result the RL30 is excluded from consideration.
This available depth limits your options.
First suggestion is that you install the RL 30 roller latch but in a reverse fashion, meaning install the nylon/metal spring body to the jamb and then the strike plate to the edge of the door. Is this an option?
Alternatively you might consider installing a bullet catch as seen in the link here:

The tension on the ball is adjustable and I would be very surprised to learn that a cat would be able to push the door open when held closed with a bullet catch as listed above.
Please review and advise thank you Richard
