Questions and Answers
Q: What is a lock function?
A: What follows is the manufacturers description of functions - please always note the ANSI function number in any manufacturers catalog and what makes the ANSI numbers handy is that if its the same answer number for brand A it will be the same function with the same answer number in brand B, C and so on. Example an F76 by Schlage is the identical function in an F76 by Arrow.

Dead bolt operated by key outside or turn inside. Key outside operates both bolts. Operating inside lever retracts both bolts and outside remains locked. Latch bolt is deadlocked when outside lever is made inoperative or when the dead bolt is projected. When dead bolt is retracted, lever is unlocked by stop or mechanical means other than key.

Classroom Security function allows control of the outside lever via key cylinders on both the inside and outside of the door. This allows a teacher to lock the classroom door during a lockdown event without opening the door and possibly being exposed to an intruder in the corridor. The cylinder on the classroom side of the door does not prevent egress; it controls the outside lever and is typically keyed so that all of the inside cylinders on classroom doors are operated by the same key or by any key in the school’s key system ("maison keying"). Classroom security locks are not restricted to classrooms and can be used in any location where key control of the outside lever is required from the inside of the room. (Doors and Hardware, May 2015, Lori Green)

Closing the door releases the push button or other inside locking device. The inside lever always operates the latch bolt.

Dormitory or Exit Lock function is defined as a lock where the latch bolt is operated by the lever from either side, except when the outside lever is made inoperative by a stop or mechanical means other than a key.
