Questions and Answers
Q: I have a 30 year old Chicago unit. What kind of replacement split spindles does it require? Need to order new. Thanks for your help.
A: The Baldwin 6563 Chicago Mortise Lockset would not take a split spindle*. It may take a swivel spindle or a half spindle depending on the application/application.

feel free to email me photographs of what youre working with specifically and I will make the recommendation for the proper spindle and be sure to include the door thickness and photos of both sides of the door and the edge of the door as well.

* The split spindle is a very specific derivative type of spindle that is composed of two or more parts that are either flat or triangular in shape and are commonly found on very old mortise locks dating from the 19th and early 20th century.

Q: There is every chance I got the name of the spindle wrong. Here are photographs of what I have now. But please be advised that I just tried to match what was in there. And maybe I did it wrong. Maybe the threads are too spaced out or too close together. Maybe everything about it is wrong. Can you steer me in the right direction of what the correct spindle/s might be. Also this unit is 32 years old. Any suggestion of a new Baldwin set that would fit in the same holes?

A: I am extremely grateful for your email because I was unaware that they did make split spindles once upon a time and your use of the term split spindle is absolutely correct. Baldwin discontinued that split spindle design perhaps in 2004 +/- and it was replaced with the BA0530.004.A as seen on the 54th page of the document as seen here:
