Questions and Answers
Q: Question: I have an alder exterior double door that will have Baldwin handlesets (one active, one dummy) installed. They are outswing doors and I want them both to be able to be used to enter/exit. The handleset has a function to retract the latch, so that should work. The last thing I need to solve is weatherproofing the meeting of the doors. With the mortised meeting stiles, how do you install them and the latches/strikes? Is it just a matter of cutting the stiles in around the hardware? Is there a particular model you would recommend? I want it to blend in with the door as much as possible while giving a good seal. Im in Louisiana where it gets very hot and humid, so weatherproofing is crucial. Also want the ability to adjust projection of the seal. The doors are already out of level with each other, so Ive got to handle that but Im sure it will happen again. They are stained with minwax provincial to give you an idea of color. Thanks.
A: How thick are your doors going to be?
Q: They are 1-3/4” doors. Best, Dominic
A: Dominic I think you can very effectively and relatively with little difficulty - weatherstrip the meeting stile of the door by implementing the following two pieces of Hardware.

The first piece of hardware is the Dorbin 97AS Black Pile Adjustable Double Door Equipment 84" Length As seen here:

This piece of weather stripping employs an extruded aluminum channel into which you will slide the black pile weather seal insert to create the effective seal between the two doors. The elegant portion of this piece of hardware is that after you have routed the channel in the edge of the wood door you employ springs underneath the extruded aluminum holder and when you use the screws to install the channel to the edge of the door you are able to control the projection Of the seal by how much you turn the screws in or out.

And yes you were very accurate to predict that you would have an interrupt where the hardware projects from the door and I would suggest that you use this piece of much smaller bristle style weatherstripping to account for that small interrupt period this piece would in effect act as a lock strip. An example of this hardware would be the Pemko 5025ASB 12" BL Mill Finish Aluminum Mortise Retainer with Black Soft Brush insert and can be seen here:

I have put together a quick hand sketch of what the concept would look like as seen here :
