Questions and Answers
Q: Sales regarding architectural heavy weight 4.5 x 4.5 ball bearing hinges, bright chrome finish, I need to order 4 of these hinges. On your website I see Bahco, Cal Royal, Bommer, Hager. I’m mostly familiar with Hager Hinges. Can you tell me the difference between the brands & which one you think “looks” the best. Thank you,
A: Thank you for the question. Do you want a 5 - knuckle hinge and will it be full mortise? Do you want steel base or brass base, or a polished stainless? What are your most important factors? Final fit and finish, domestically manufactured, lead time, cost.

Allow me to also ask, which from this list is your favorite and may I suggest others?

Q: what is the weight rating for this hinge
A: The weight rating of the BAHCO BB0199-NRP-32D 4.5x4.5in Hinge-Full Mortise-Heavy Weight-Ball Bearing-Non Removable Pin-Stainless Steel Base-Satin Finish depends on the size of the door and the frequency of use. Can you tell me more about your application?
Q: FRP Hurricane door from Chem-Pruf 72”x 84” with 126 lbs of epoxy surface textured as rockwork for an outdoor aquarium Sea Lion Exhibit.
A: What is the weight of the door and frequency of use?
Q: Shot of shed and doors. Only using 3 doors.

A: okay - what is the follow up question?
Q: 4 hinges per door? Are they in stock? will they allow the doors to swing open 180 degrees? David
A: yes to all 3 and the 180° will be dependent of wall conditions -

Also do you intend to have the inner door, fold against the face of the right side door and then that entire assembly fold against the wall?

Q: Also do you intend to have the inner door, fold against the face of the right side door and then that entire assembly fold against the wall? = YES.
A: The hinges on the outer right side will need to be wide throw hinges and please " sink you teeth" into the formula here:

Q: Excellent video on wide throw hinges Richard. Could you recommend a good 4.5” x 6” ball bearing hinge that won’t break the bank? I’ll need 8 for this shed. Thanks,
A: I sure can -

Q: will do Richard. do you think we’ll be okay with a “standard weight” hinge for the door that has the middle door hanging off of it? also, am I correct to assume I just need 4.5” x 4.5” hinges for the center door? Thanks! You’ve been a big help!
A: well I would prefer heavyweight, but your tripling the price - I would rather see you had 5 - hinges in lieu of 4, just because all that width is on one doors hinges only.
Q: Hello- I am interested in the BAHCO BB0199 SS hinge. Is there a similar hinge available that has a removable pin? Thanks, Matt M
A: Indeed yes the hinge you've asked for which is the BAHCO BB0199-NRP-32D 4.5x4.5 Can operate as a removable pin hinge just by simply loosening the set screw that is in the barrel that allows the feature of the non-removable pin function to operate. You can either loosen the set screw to allow the PIN to be driven out or you can simply remove it altogether if you never have a need to lock the pin down. Having said this there are loads of other hinges that do not feature the non-removable pin potential such as the Paramount BB1099-4545-32D Heavy Duty Ball Bearing Full Mortise Hinge - 4.5" x 4.5" Satin St Steel as seen here:

Q: Hi Rich, Thanks very much for your detailed response. I am building a set of wood carriage house doors for an old barn I have, so I am not really concerned about having a pin that is non-removable. My thought is that a removable pin would allow me to separate the hinge halves, and aid in locating/machining the mortise on the jamb side...but not an absolute requirement. You have such a wide selection of hinges I was having trouble deciding. The doors are 2 1/8" thick and weigh in at about 115 lbs each. Thanks again. Matt
A: The hinge leafs can be separated with the NRP hinge and you want 5 x 5 BB0199 three per door.
Q: Great, thanks. So to make sure I am on the same page, the "BB0199-NRP-32D 5x5" is what I would order and the leafs can indeed be separated? Thanks again for your help, Matt
A: We are indeed on the same page. The hinge I am referring to is here:

And yes indeed I am verifying the hinge leafs can be separated.

Q: Is there any pro / con in choosing 4.5x4.5 over 5 x 4.5?
A: There is a significant disadvantage in that a 5-inch tall hinge will be about 25% more capable of handling the weight of a heavier than average door. If your frame and door are already prepped for 5” you obviously have no choice but to purchase 5 inch tall hinges.

Q: when referencing the 5x45. Is "5" the height and 4.5" the width?
A: Yes, the first measurement indicates the height of the hinge and the second measurement is the width.
