Q: The drawing of the 303_s weatherstrip doesn't add up. If the material is nailed to the face of the door as shown, expansion and contraction of the door due to humidity and/or temperature (guaranteed in solid wood doors) will cause problems with door fit and operation of the weatherstrip itself. Shouldn't the 303 be nailed to the stop with the bulb just barely compressed (so as to not interfere with lockset/deadbolt operation)?
A: You are most correct. Personally do not recommend the use of bulb type weatherstripping for use as astragals. A better astragal in my opinion is the Pemko 18041CNB 84" Clear Anodized Aluminum Nylon Brush Gasketing as seen here:

And even better, if you can mortise the edge of the door, I would use the
Dorbin 97AS Black Pile Adjustable Double Door Equipment 84" Length as seen here:

Because you have the ability to adjust the projection to account for the change in enviornmental condition, door sag, use and abuse, and fianlly wear and tear the occurs on the hinge, particularily the top hinge, on the door opening. Our video here:

discusses hoe the 97AS is installed and adjusted after installation.
