Q: Found them in the small envelope. I was looking in the boxes. No problems with keys. I see I have 3 tail pieces for deadbolts and 3 for knobs/ levers. 1. The metal ring is for deadbolts? 2. Is the plastic piece for knobs/levers or deadbolts also? 3. I deadbolts get both which goes on the inside (closer to cylinder)? 4. I know I push in the pin to get the retainer off the back of the cylinder but can you give me any further instructions on removing and re-installing it? Thanks, Fred
A: I am glad you located the keys, sorry for making that a chore.
Indeed the metal ring is used for the lazy action deadbolt tailpieces but the plastic piece is used to allow the deadbolt type tailpieces to operate in a standard fixed tailpiece function. The tailpiece needs to be installed closest to the backside of the cylinder and in instructions for removing and reinstalling the tailpiece can be reviewed here:
The plastic piece mounts over the tailpiece against the screw cap when needed to minimize slop in the chassis cavity depth.
A short video showing typical installation and configuration can be reviewed here:

Q: Do you know if Ilco makes a cylinder that fits a Schlage B562 (double cylinder) lock? The cylinders I bought fit the Schlage knobs, levers and single side deadbolts but the screwcap retainer pin is in the 10 o'clock position and it needs to be in the 2 o'clock position for the B562. They should just drill a hole there for it and it would fit a lot more locks. Fred
A: Hello Fred. The Schlage B500 series is a fairly generic deadbolt in its construction, but - but the B562 is a special setup in regards to the tailpieces. The tailpieces are meant to communicate through the latchbolt together from either side. Can you please be more clear as to what you are facing, what is the confoundin gissue and what you wish to accomplish. I am intrigued.
Q: Yes, the B562 is a different set up. The hole that the tailpieces have to fit through in the deadbolt piece is not vertical or horizontal when the deadbolt is retracted. It is on a diagonal. Since you can only turn the tailpieces a certain number of degrees in either direction, you can't quite get the inner piece to turn far enough so the tailpiece can slide into the hole in the deadbolt on top of the tailpiece of the outer lock. The OEM cylinders that came with the lock have the locking pin for the screw cap in a different location (2 o'clock vs 10 o'clock) so the same tailpieces on their locks will line up correctly on both sides. If there was a hole in the exact right position, I would move the pin there and then it would work. Since I had no problem putting the cylinders into my Schlage knobs, levers or single deadbolts, I suspect that this may be one of the few Schlage locks that cylinder won't work on. Fred
A: Your right Fred and if the lazy style deadbolt tailpieces simply had the pie cut base is a different degree orientation to the flat portion of the tailpiece to match the degree of the angle of the Schlage latchbolt, and were made as Left and Right Hand (if that degree was not 45°), it should work.
Question. Do the Schlage stock tailpieces fit in the backside of the Kaba Ilco cylinder? Or I might suggest you place the tailpiece in a vice and then with a channel lock, twist the tailpiece enough to give the amount of relief you need. But these tailpieces still need to fit together, like a positive and negative die mold in the latchbolt when doing a double cylinder. This is the "rub".
Q: Yes. If the tailpieces were made with the blade portion oriented differently to the pie base it could work. The tailpieces that came with the lock do fit the ilco cylinder. I think if i twist them enough to mate I may break them and then the lock won't work at all. I think if I twist them they also won't be flat enough to mate properly in the slot in the latch bolt. Very frustrating after getting all the other cylinders installed so easily in the other eight locks. Fred
A: Factually speaking, Schlage, for all the years I have sold their products, I believe make much of their product line (and especially the deadbolts) wholly incompatible with other types of locksets. I would not give up and believe it is possible, with some experimentation and possible a couple extra Schlage original tailpieces, you can make this work.
