Q: Hager mortise lock conversion question
Hi Rich,
Thank you for your youtube videos. Theyve been very helpful.
I have an oddball curve to throw at ya:
Im working on a project to replace the front doors of the house with some reclaimed and restored doors from a church. A couple of years ago I got a heavy duty Hager mortise lock and would like to use it. I didnt realize it wasnt an entry lock until recently.
What I have is a Hager 3800 series mortise lock. Specifically a 3896 “Privacy with Indicator.” I need to turn it into an Entry (3853) or Corridor (3856) model.
So, can I convert a 3896 into a 3853?
If so, in order to do that I need:
1. Mortise Cylinder
2. Latchbolt/Deadbolt
3. Inside Thumb-turn
4. Armor Front”
I found a pdf for a 2 3/8” Backset Latchbolt (part number 3941), but I think I need the 2 ¾” Backset Latchbolt... and cant find a part number for it.
I also found a part number for the Mortise Cylinder (3902)
And on your website I found part numbers for the:
Hager tapered cylinder collar oil rubbed bronze 3918 US10B ($6.24)
Hager flat cylinder collar oil rubbed bronze 1 3/8" x 11/32" 3928 US10B ($6.24)
Hager thru bolt bag 2" to 2 1/2" door 2-669-0365 ($3.98)
Hager armor front 1 1/4 square corner oil rubbed bronze 02-669-0236 US10B ($5.71)
Hager armor front 1 1/4" round corner oil rubbed bronze 2-669-0296 US10B ($5.71)
Hager thumbturn for 3853 oil rubbed bronze 2-669-0408 US10B ($15.61)
Hager thumbturn for 3896 oil rubbed bronze 2-669-0415 US10B ($15.61)
I called Hager and they werent interested in one-off parts for a regular guy. They said they really dont sell parts to the public and suggested I buy an Entry lockset. One small issue.... Theyre $400 to $600!!!
All that said, can you help me with the parts I need to convert this 3896 into a 3853? Its the deadbolt that has me stumped at the moment. and also if the guts of a 3896 are the same as a 3853 so just by adding the appropriate parts I can make my Hager mortise lock useful.
Thanks for your time and any help or insights,
