Questions and Answers
Q: have a 1950 Dexter thumb latch to door knob assembly that isn't working properly. My dad always keep it working but he is gone now and it has fallen to me. Problem is, he didnt share his tricks. The knob is hard to turn and works it's way partly off the spindle. The set screw is tight. The thumb latch will retract manually. The latch sticks and you have to play between the knob and thumb latch to get it back out. I have enclosed some pictures of it as seen here:

I saw some utube videos of where you help some people with there locks. Please, I cannot find a video of how to work on this . I am afraid I am going to disassemble it and not be able to get it back together. I would hate to loose it. I have had the knob off, obviously, and have ordered some spindles but cannot figure out how to get the spindle out to change it. The old spindle has up and down play in it. Help an old woman please.

A: I must admit I do not have an intimate level of knowledge when it comes to the workings of that Dexter mid-twentieth-century grip handle lock - having said that, it is a fairly simple mechanism and based on your photographs appears to be in proper working condition given its age, I would certainly suggest contacting a local locksmith who ought to be able to not only bring it back to full operating condition also give you advice as to how to perform maintenance on the lockset moving forward.
