Q: The client wants us to provide the doors stain the doors "black" using a closed grain veneer. What would you suggest as a veneer to obtain a uniform black finish (no heartwood contrast). I am tempted to say select maple. What are your thoughts?
A: Select Quartered Maple is what we would suggest. Select would use only sap wood (no heartwood) and quarter slicing is when the quarter log, or flitch, is mounted on the flitch table so that the growth rings of the log strike the knife at approximately right angles, producing a series of stripes, straight in some wood, varied on others.

Q: Hi the architectural solid core cherry wood door, is that plain sliced or quarter sliced?
A: Plain sliced and I think in 30 years I did quarter sliced perhaps one time on cherry.
Q: Can i cut a solid core cherry door into 16” wide planks
A: While you can certainly cut the door with a circular or table saw, what are you intending to turn it into?
Q: Thanks. I am trying to make two 16” by 80” console tables.
A: In the process of cutting these you will expose the particle core on two of the 4 sides. How will you contend with this?
Q: I have no idea. That probably should have been my question.
A: Doors dont usually make good tables for this reason and the cost, unless you can get a door (perhaps a cull door) very inexpensively.
If you want to use doors as tables, you are better off just ordered two 1/4 x 6/8 doors, prefinished is a good option, and getting exactly what you require. Is this an option?
