Q: Does Von Duprin have an exit device that is pneumatic?
A: The Von Duprin Pneumatic PN98/99 series exit devices feature provides remote latch bolt retraction in hazardous areas where electrically operated devices would not be permitted. The Von Duprin Pneumatic or "PN" device was designed for Intrinsically Safe Class 1, Division 1 applications.
Q: What is the difference between Panic Hardware and Fire Exit Hardware?
A: The most obvious difference (in the device) is the lack of mechanical dogging on a Fire Rated Device. There are some internal parts that may be different and the method it is secured to the door may vary. Each specific device has different factors.
Panic Hardware and Fire Exit Hardware are two different types of exit devices, and the proper selection is determined by code requirements.
Panic Hardware is an exit device which is tested for use on a door that is required to have panic hardware, but cannot be used on a fire door. Panic hardware typically has the dogging feature, which allows the latches to be held retracted to create a push/pull function.
Fire Exit Hardware is an exit device which is tested for both panic and fire conditions and is required to be used on fire doors where panic hardware is required by code or desired for durability. Since fire doors require positive-latching, fire exit hardware does not incorporate mechanical dogging. If a push/pull function is desired for a fire door, electric latch retraction hardware may be installed, as long as the latch projects automatically upon fire alarm.
The International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101 – The Life Safety Code contain similar requirements for locations where panic hardware is installed:
Panic hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL 305;
Fire exit hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL 10C and UL 305;
The actuating portion of the releasing device shall extend at least one-half of the door leaf width;
and - the maximum unlatching force shall not exceed 15 pounds (67 N).
If balanced doors are used and panic hardware is required, the panic hardware shall be the push-pad type and the pad shall not extend more than one-half the width of the door measured from the latch side.
Depending on how exit devices are ordered, Von Duprin and Falcon-Monarch exits are supplied as either Panic Hardware or Fire Exit Hardware. These devices are factory labeled as either:

Q: What is the narrowest door a 99 rim, single door can fit on?
A: he Minimum single door opening should be 26.32" and use the 299 or 499F strike.
Q: What is the backset for a 98/99 rim device with a 1609 strike?
A: The Von Duprin 1609 strike is used most commonly when you have a pair of doors where the active door will have a rim device and the inactive door will either have surface bolts or perhaps flush bolts or it will have a surface vertical rod device.
the back said that you are going to install the device at it's going to be dependent on what device you are using specifically as this strike can be used with both Von Duprin and Falcon brand exit devices.
at this time I am unable to locate a template showing the backset of a 99 exit only device when using a 1609 strike however the manufacturer's product catalog, specifically the 148th page has seen here:
Download File
While does not provide backset information it did does give you dimensional guidance by which to install the strike and where to position the exit device headcase in relationship to that overlapping strike.
Keep in mind the use of an overlapping strike like this will sometimes require both a coordinator and a carry bar and if you forward to us your complete hardware set we can detail better for you what a complete hard reset would look like safely use this harbor in conjunction with each other.
I was able to locate templates when using this strike with falcon 24 and 25 series devices along with a template when using the strike with a von duprin 22 and 2227 series device.

Q: What finishes should be used on exit devices near the ocean or in saltwater environments?
A: Von Duprin Exit Devices (33A/35A, 98/99, etc) are handled on a case by case basis regarding their ability to handle salt and chemical environments.
Our powder coated finishes US28 (Anodized Aluminum) and 313AN (Anodized Duranotic – Dark Bronze) are superior to our chrome plated finishes such as US26D (Chromium – Dull) and US10 (Satin Bronze, Clear Coated) as well as others when installed in a salt or corrosive environment. Additionally, the US28 and 313AN finishes are sprayed electro statically, wrapping all around the parts, providing a much greater ability to withstand the salt and chemical environments under their 3 year mechanical warranty and beyond. All carbon steel internal parts have a zinc dichromate coating applied to inhibit corrosion.
The electromechanical exit devices (EL, QEL) have the same corrosion resistance for their mechanical parts. The electrical components such as the RX switch are weather resistant, not weather proof.
The Von Duprin 98 Series Exit Device is available in a 304 grade stainless steel alloy. The 304 stainless steel alloy is corrosion resistant not corrosion proof thus in highly corrosive applications the exit device may rust over time (e.g. center case covers, inside the end caps areas, etc.). Q: Why doesn't full rotation of the AD or CO Series Exit Trim (993) outside lever fully retract the Von Duprin 98/99 Exit Device latch?
A: AD Series and CO series products require that the Night Latch (NL) screw is installed in the exit device. Be sure this screw is installed
- Exit hardware and strike must be properly mounted to ensure that the strike is NOT too close to the latch bolt when closed and that the trim can move the bolt past the strike to allow entry without mechanical interference
- Test the exit installation using the "Electronic Access" or trim input to retract the latch. Be advised, the mechanical key can retract the bolt further than the electronic access using the outside lever, so it is important to test for proper operation using the electronic access trim or Lever
- Von Duprin devices require the standard "Twisted Tailpiece" to provide as much bolt retraction as possible. Competitive devices will utilize the flat or "Straight" tailpiece provided from the factory
- Miss-adjusted exit devices or strike location could cause the bolt to hit the strike on entry. Customers then will pull hard on the trim lever and cause additional stress on the lever to gain access, Pulling hard on the lever can cause abusive forces on the lever and result in a crack at the base of the lever.
Q: Can the Von Duprin EL option be added to any existing 98/99 device?
A: The Von Duprin EL option can be added to any existing 33A/35A, 98/99 series exit devices.

Q: Good Morning Richard! I hope your weekend was well. I am a subscriber to your YouTube channel and I have a question about fire exit hardware. Do you know a brand of exit device that still uses a fusible link within the housing that at the time of fire that exit device no longer is operable. We are putting together a training locally for our AHJ’s and I am putting together a slide deck of the differences in panic versus fire exit devices. Thank you, Jared CFDAI DHIA
A: I do not - in fact my 30 years of experience has not put me in front of a exit device that incorporates a fusible link assuming its function was to render inoperable the exit devices means of emergency egress. I must admit I've never heard of this. It's my understanding that the difference between a panic versus a fire device was the base construction of the head assembly itself where as - I would very commonly see a dead locking tab incorporated in a fire rated device rather than a exit device.
I would however reach out to the fine people over at Von Duprin [email removed] and pose this question to them. If anyone knows it would be the find individuals in their support department.
Thank you, Rich Howard AAADM AFL ARL CFDAI CRL DHT IQP
Q: Can a Von Duprin 98/99 standard device be converted to a CX98/99 device?
A: The standard Von Duprin mechanical or electrical 98/99/33/35 exit devices can not be converted to a CX98/99 or CX33/35 device.

Exterior trims for standard and Chexit device are the same.
If access from exterior with card reader is needed 996L or E996L trim is required with Chexit device. Q: Is there any way to lock the push side of an opening with a Von Duprin exit device?
A: Assuming that you have an exit device that is installed because of requirement by code, you cannot lock the push side of the exit device as a panic device by design must allow exit. Any attempt to block an exit is forbidden by code.
Q: Can I put an old style hex dogging kit (050153) on my 99 panic device?
A: We don't recommend to use the old style hex dogging kit into the new 98/99 exit device but it would fit as long as the device is not fire rated.
Q: What electrified trim will work with 98 or 99 series devices?
A: The only electric trim that is used with the 98/99 series exit device that Von Duprin offers is E996L lever trim. This trim is used to lock or unlock the lever trim for the 98/99 series exit devices.

Q: Von Duprin 99EO Rim Exit Device Device
A: The 98/99 rim device can be converted to double cylinder 98-2 or 99-2.
Double cylinder features an inside key cylinder which locks or unlocks the outside trim (Classroom Function) and an outside cylinder which
retracts the latch bolt only (Night Latch Function) when outside trim is locked.
98/99-2 conversion kit for RHR door is 050388-Finish and 050389-Finish for LHR door.
These kits includes center case, center case cover and cylinder mounting hardware.
These parts can be purchased separately. See parts price book.
To rehand a 98-2 or 99-2 you need a new handed center case and new handed center case cover.
Double cylinder cant be used on a 98/99-EO device. It requires a Classroom trim.
98-2 or 99-2 requires two rim cylinders one for device side and one for trim side.
Q: How does the 98-2 or 99-2 double cylinder function affect the outside lever trim?
A: Double cylinder (-2 or -2SI) features an inside key cylinder which locks or unlocks the outside trim and an outside key cylinder which retracts the latch bolt only (Night latch function). This is only available on rim or mortise lock devices.
Rim devices require two rim type cylinders. Mortise devices require 1 rim cylinder and 1 mortise cylinder (1 1/4" with a straight cam). (Schlage cam reference L583-475.)
Available functions are thumbpiece, knob or lever.
Q: Can the 99 be done as a double cylinder?
A: Sure can, it becomes the 99-2.
Q: Can the fire label be replaced on a Von Duprin device?
A: The UL fire label is only applied to the device center case cover at the factory when the device is built. This label can not be sold or replaced with a new one.
A new device would need to be purchased or you can contact UL or Intertek and have them come and re-certify the exit device.
Q: Do Von Duprin Exit devices meet the 5 pound force requirement for opening an ADA handicapped door opening?
A: The 5 pound force requirement is in reference to the maximum force to swing the door, not the maximum force allowed to unlatch the exit device. Maximum allowed force to retract the Von Duprin exit devices is 15 pounds per ANSI.156.3.
Except in California as of 1/1/2014,
With California Builders Code changes effective 1/1/2014, •CBC (2013) 11B-309.4 Accessibility to Public Buildings, the five pound maximum "in California" now includes unlatch force for panic exit and fire exit devices.
In May 2014 Von Duprin introduced the AX series EXIT device. The AX has five pounds or less touch bar activation force and is UL Certified to be CBC (2013) 11B-309 compliant.
Q: Are there any instructions for Von Duprin device maintenance?
A: Please see the Maintenance Kit Manual here:

Q: Is the Von Duprin 2' door device provided with a UL label?
A: The Special Von Duprin 2' door device as of 02-07-14 is now shipped with UL Panic Hardware label or UL Fire Exit Hardware label. The 2’ devices are most commonly used in 5’ wide door opening applications where a combination of 3’ and 2’ leaves are used.
Q: We are providing door hardware for an exit door. The door has a wood panel on the face so it blends in with the wall panels. We have been asked to provide a von Duprin 99 series panick bar. Will any of these work with a panel or do we have to cutout the panel to receive the hardware? It’s a ¾” panel that will be 1” off the face of the door.
A: Modifying the door may be an option as well as custom shims, which we can provide. send a cross section of the door/panel as well as the jamb section.
Q: Hello, I am trying to find an exit device for a laundry facility. They have a 3’-6” narrow stile aluminum door in bronze finish with 2-1/8” stiles, and are wanting a rim exit device that has timed locking capabilities (unlocked from 8-5, locks automatically after). I know there are some lever trims that have that functionality, like the Alarm Lock ETDL series, but I’m not sure if that will interface with a panic that will fit a door stile that narrow. Are you aware of anything that would work for this application?
They are hoping to not have to add a power supply, that’s why I was thinking of the electrified trim as I know there are battery operated options. But I am open to other options if it makes more sense to do so.
A: While I prefer latch retraction on the exit device with a keypad on the ingress side, the Alarm Lock DL1300ET x Alarm Lock TP-1698 x Jackson 1095 would meet your requirements.
