A: There might be two items on the lock body that you are referring to in terms of a button.
First - there is the item on the face of the lock case that does indeed look like a button. That item is certainly the hold back feature of the latch bolt. Meaning when you rotate the thumb turn to retract the latch you can then push down that button and hold the latch in so that it does not automatically relock every single time the door closes. That operation can be beneficial if you are coming in and out, do not want to leave the door ajar and want the door to return to the closed position but you do not want to enter every time having to use the key for reentry. In short that button is to perform the hold back feature.
There is also an item sticking out of the end of the case to the right of the thumb turn if you're viewing the original image. Possibly not called a button but none the less maybe it's what you're referring to. That is what is called the shutter guard that prevents access to the hub assembly which could retract the latch Bolt from the exterior. Meaning if someone were to damage, destroy or otherwise remove the cylinder through brute force from the exterior there is a spring-loaded piece of metal that is called the shutter guard that prevents access from inserting a simple tool into the lock to gain entry. That tab sticking out of the end of the body when depressed will allow access to the hub on the inside which you only activate when you are initially installing the rim cylinder from the exterior.
