Introduction

Pivot sets provide the best possible means of hanging a door. They are designed to work with the laws of physics to provide long-lasting performance and reliability.
The weight of the door is supported entirely by the bottom arm, which is directly connected to the pivot spindle. This hanging means provides several important advantages:
• Fasteners on the door and frame are in shear rather than tension (as with hinges) and are less likely to pull out overtime. This creates less stress on the frame assembly, prevents door sagging and allows the door to swing with less resistance from friction.
• A door supported in this manner relies on the strength of the floor to carry the weight, not the frame. This allows extremely heavy doors to be hung in an opening and allows door adjustment throughout the life of the building to compensate for settlement.

• Offset or center hung pivot sets are more attractive than alternative door hanging devices.
• Full floor-to-ceiling concealment is offered for center hung doors providing almost unlimited design flexibility.

Suggested Specification

All pivots and/or pivot sets shall be the product of one manufacturer. Sets as noted in hardware groups shall be matching in design for both labeled fire doors, lead-lined doors and regular doors. Pivots for 20-minute fire doors shall be non-ferrous and match the finish of adjacent hardware. All pivot sets are required to meet ANSI grade one standard as listed in ANSI 156.4. Caps shall be hex type to increase security.

A: Offset vs. Center Hung Application

3/4" Offset: Pivot point located 3/4" from the heel edge of the door and 3/4" from face of door

1-1/2" Offset: Pivot point located 3/4" from the heel edge of the door and 1-1/2" from face of door. Used on doors with cladding on face or trim on frame

Center Hung: Pivot point centered in thickness of door. Distance from heel edge can vary 2-3/4" and up (Not for use on fire rated doors

Q: I need your help again. They decided to use wood in our entry vestibule which puts the finished floor 1-3/8” above the conc slab. Q: I checked through your videos on Youtube but did not find what I am looking for and do not even know if such a part exists so I am asking you. I have a bookcase that I am placing in front of a door and the bookcase is wider than the door frame. I planned on putting a 1x4 around the door frame to which I would attach a set of hinges on one side to the bookcase. I do not want exposed hinges and can not seem to find any hinge other than a Soss that would have to be mortised into the bookcase, which has 3/4" sides. The bookcase is on casters so there is essentially no weight on the hinges themselves. Obviously, the hinges would have to extend out, then swing open to give clearance to the bookcase. Do they even make a hinge that would fit this application and if so, do you sell it? Thanks for your time,

and is composed of steel and brass based components. The finished plate installed in the header can be ordered in 630 Stain Stainless Steel, but the balance of the hardware will include ferrous based items.

Q: I found this on your youtube video. What I don't understand is how we can make sure the top and bottom pins are perfectly aligned. There seems to be no way to adjust the door? Maybe I could get a copy of the installation instructions, please?
A: A plumb bob is used to confirm the header portion and floor portion of the pivot are perfectly plumb and you are correct there is no provision to adjust the point of plumb once your installation is complete. Rixson does offer a tool to assist in ensuring your installation is plumb and that the door and hardware will operate correctly as seen here:

Q: I appreciate your persistence, Richard.

What we're looking for is a door that opens in front of the header rather than below the header. Thinking you have manufacturing contacts, or at least can package components as needed, I offer the attached design sketches for what I need, and you can sell it to others if you'd like. Or maybe you know someone who's already offering what I need.

We're starting with the Rixson 370 or equivalent center hung pivot hardware, but using only the floor-mount and the top and bottom door hardware:

instead of the complete 345 top pivot set, we use only the door hardware and attach the upper pivot post, a simple 1/2-inch-diameter pin, to a fabricated plate (3/8-inch steel) that screws down onto the header to hold the door in place.

This has a couple of advantages for our application:
1) the doors can be the same height as the walls, which in our condition are a foot shorter than the ceiling, and
2) our carpenter can make sure the door is straight before he locks the upper pivot in place. We obviously have to be careful about the length of the pin-holding arm, making sure the pivot point is far enough from the header for the heel of the door to clear, but that's easy.

We can also mount a simple magnetic catch on the header to make sure the door is aligned in the closed position. In our case, we'll have five doors down a hallway, so they'll have to be straight.

Worst case, you sell me the components I need, and I find someone locally to make up the top plate. We'll only use five sets in this job.

Our carpenter is thinking about using the standard 370 (with the 345 top set) on other doors rather than Tectus, or regular old butt hinges. He has some time for that decision. Thanks for your consieration, Jim

A: It appears you considering an overlay door application and ask if you are too planning to bullnose the door stile on the door side facing the wall to account for this application. Assuming you are, then I would simply suggest you use the Rixson 180 x 1-1/2" offset top pivot, but use on the door portion, turn it over 180° and use that portion only for the header mounting plate. Even better might be to simply install the Rixson 180 1-1-2x102 into the top of the doors as seen here:

Q: Hi, We're engineering a pivot door that measures 6' 6" w 8' h. There will be a drop down seal on the bottom. I am aware of the complications with using drop down seals on pivot doors. The pivot is 15 inches from the left edge. The door will weigh 600 pounds. I will need at least four wires electrified through the top pivot. Stainless steel is a plus. Oh, the door thickness will be three inches. It's made of a stainless steel frame and finished with mahogany. The stainless frame can be whatever thickness I need in order to attach the pivot. I'm referring to the actual skeleton of the door itself. I plan to mortise the drop down seal into the front side of the door into the wood facing. The actual door jamb will be concrete with no threshold. Thank You for your time. Best Regards

1. How do you plan on mitigating the incompatibility of a swinging pivot hung door and an automatic door bottom?

The electric version is known as the EH345 and adds about 35% to the cost of the unit.

3. There are no pivot manufacturers I am aware of that provide a unit engineered and specified to handle the width of your door. Having said that, speaking from first-hand experience, I can tell you that clients have used the following Rixson H117-3/4 Pivot Set as seen here:

with complete success. Ultimately however you must be the final judge as to whether or not this piece of Hardware will be compatible and ultimately suitable for your installation. Does this pivot look like a winner?

4. Solid stainless steel will not be an option for a pivot of this nature, but can be provided with brass base components with a satin chrome finish on the exposed pieces. Will satin chrome finish be acceptable?

Q: Hi Richard, I have been contracted to create a hidden bookcase door for a client. I am wondering if you know of a device that will actually start to lift the bookcase as it is rotated to the open position? So the idea is that when the bookcase is in the closed position the baseboard (front bottom of bookcase) will be flush to the floor. As the bookcase is swung open the door will start to slightly lift clearing the floor so there is no scratching. I'm figuring the bottom pin could be some sort of cam mechanism. A: .7310” is the total maximum projection of the top pin from the Rixson 340 top pivot.
Q: Does the Rixson 370 center hung pivot set allow the door to open 180 degrees?
A: The 370 would actually turn like a revolving door meaning it would go 360° if it wasn't stopped by the frame or wall condition.
Q: Gap at top and bottom of door
A: 1/8" @ Top and variable at bottom though 5/16" min up tp 11/16" max is the typical clearance.
Q: Richard, I have watched your YouTube videos on the Rixson 370 and after also seeing a video posted on building a bookcase, I decided to use the hinge for a hidden bookshelf type project, where the door will open outward (left hand hung) into the kitchen area but will offer the wife a pantry shelf on the inside face. We have a set of stairs leading down to in-law suite in lower level of home and we want to hide those stairs with this project. The outside presentation of this door will look like kitchen cupboard doors but they will be fixed. When the door opens, the inside will be pantry shelves. We will be able to walk down the stairs with the door in open position. The shelf will be approx. 12” deep, or a bit narrower if you suggest. We know that the overall weight limit is 500 lbs. I understand the pivot spindle clearance to the door jam will be 2” and also the requirement for the 1/8” camber on the leading edge of the “door” for clearance but I’m unsure about the positioning of the hinge on the overall door width - I would assume that the hinges (bottom spindle & top jam portion) should be placed in the centre line of this thicker “door / bookshelf”. Am I correct? I understand that I’m not able to seek specific engineering recommendations but do appreciate your insight prior to starting the work. Thanks for your videos and shared experiences.
A: With this application and all others just like it I can produce an AutoCad rendering to "work out" the precise details of where to locate the vertical axis of pivoting. We would the details of the door thickness and width along with the jamb cross section detail along with your inset and clearance accommodations if any are required. We generally offer this service at no charge for orders placed for the pivot hardware. Please note you have options when it comes to the load capacity of the center hung pivot in that 500 lb is not the maximum weight rating available.

Q: Hi, I would like to check if it is ok to use the Rixon 370 on a 4ft * 10ft door? (recommended spec is 3 8" x 86"). Given the house is not in an earthquake zone, I feel it is probably ok to use the 370 as is (since switching top pivot hinge 345 will increase the cost significantly). So wanted to check in with you to see if this usually done in the field?
A: My answer would always be referring to the manufacturers product documentation which tells us, according to the 167th page of the manufacturers product catalog as seen here:

which tells us

Door Sizes up to 38"x 86"*

Therefore the height of your application requires the 345 top pivot.

Regarding the width, if your vertical axis of pivoting is at least 4" off the pivot jamb, then the 370 x 345 would be an acceptable pivot provided the door was less than 450 lbs**

* For doors taller than 86" use top pivot 345 in lieu of 340

**Having said the above I know my clients have installed the Rixson 370 pivot set on doors far larger and heavier that the recommended maximum door size and weight listed in the manufacturers catalog (though doing so eliminates the factory warranty).

A: There are several concealed door closers available to make your door, hung using "center hung" pivot hardware return to center.
