Questions and Answers
Q: ABSupply, I am rebuilding a door frame and would like to use a adjustable top threshold. I was curious if you would recommend a preference of the Pemko 94518 or the 74518? Is one of these better/worse for this? The 94518 has more wood from the cross section so it looks like it would be able to be more securely attached to the jambs, but also have more wood to potentially rot out. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
A: Is the door an inswing or an outswing application?

Q: It is an in-swing door. From look at these two thresholds it would seem both would be suitable. I just wasn't sure if you would recommend one over the other.
A: The 74518 is my choice because it features a synthetic wood substrate as seen here:

I would add this Pemko door sweep with drip car to the exterior:

And this combination should be a very effective seal.

Q: Ok, thanks Rich. Will that door sweep really work on an in-swing door and not just get trashed from constantly being dragged inward over the threshold and then out over the threshold again? Or is there a trick to make it just brush the top off the threshold or something? -Ben
A: It will work (there needs to be something there) - just allow it to skim seal 1/8" type overlap and the drip cap will be outrageously effective driving any water back off the face of the door down onto the 5° bevel away from the door - unless are able to rout the bottom of the door? If so, I would use this automatic door bottom:

If you can mortise the bottom of the door, the sweep on the exterior with the drip cap, you would have the most seal possible.

Q: Rich, I have a serious problem with cold air coming in my front door.

Right now my door does not have a seal at the bottom om the door and I would like to add a seal. The bottom of the door is like a standard residential steel door with an adjustable top. So my original plan was to just put a sweep to the bottom of the door but I definitely like the idea of the exterior sweep as well. Is there something you can suggest?

A: Certainly and thank you for the question. I understand you have an adjustable top threshold similar to the Pemko 95518D unit as seen here:

And I would approach your problem using two different items, starting with the Pemko 209DV door bottom as seen here:

This unit will seal the bottom of the door to the top of threshold's adjustable top.

However I would prefer to have the first line of defense on the exterior of the door rather than under the door by adding the Pemko 4131DRL automatic door bottom as seen here:

The automatic door bottom will tuck away nicely into the housing when the door is opened and seal the door spledidly when closed.

To finish off this total approach to seal the bottom of the door, apply 1 pair of these Adhesive Corner Pads which apply to the corner of jamb on hinge side to seal against air and light infiltration as seen here:

Certainly a belt and suspenders approach, but I believe this is a combination that a). you had in mind and b). will inexpensively but fully seal the bottom of your door.
