Q: Hi, I've watched a few of your videos on automatic door bottoms, and it looks like the Pemko 434ARL might be suitable. My door is 35-7/8 inches wide and 1-3/4 inches thick. I have about a 3/8 inch gap to the threshold. I'm wondering how much allowance I need for the end caps thickness. I can't find the end cap dimensions in the installation notes. Should I order the 36 inch version and trim it down myself? In one of your videos, you mentioned that the ADB makes a noise when the door opens. I don't think this will be a problem for me, but I'm interested in what other options there are for quieter ADBs. Looking forward to hearing from you.
A: The end caps are so thin, approximately .02”, an allowance is not provided for that very thin piece of aluminum sheet metal. Having said that I personally would make every attempt at mortising it flush but when it's that thin, it's not realistic.
Regarding the question of trimming it down - I would encourage you not to do so and order your door bottom the exact size that you need saving you the time and trouble of having to cut it down, since the factories going to cut it out of components anyway, and will also serve to eliminate the potential for cutting it incorrectly or damaging it during the process.
Automatic door bottoms do most absolutely clank when the door is opened especially when the door is opened very quickly. While complaints are not unheard-of they are very infrequent. In fact in about a 30 year time span it may have been brought to my attention five times - having said that two of those five times were proved to be a fatal flaw for our client and their requirements (they simply could not live with the sound that the drop bar makes when it comes back into the housing. My personal argument against that is the clear and unique advantages of the automatic door bottom and how it so elegantly seals the bottom of the door, and in fact solves other problems at the same time, and as a result far outways that one inconsequential inconvenience). If you would like to look at a model that will substantially muffle that sound it would be the

Take note that it is substantially more expensive but it is a substantially higher caliber automatic door bottom.
Q: If I order the 434ARL at the exact width of my door (for example, NET size 35-15/16 Inch), do I need to deduct for thickness of the end plates? Or... do you guys already accommodate for the end plates?
A: Each endplate is 1/16” thick which should be absorbed by the gap around the door as the standard gap is 1/8” on the latch side and usually 1/8" or more on the hinge side, depending if it is mortised or not...
