Questions and Answers
Q: I need a custom length cylinder & thumbturn. The lock is centered on the door and the thickness of the door is 2 ¾ so you can find the right length of the cylinder. Do you have a formula to check the correct length of the turn knob and cylinder?

I have a 3-9/16" thick door with the lock centered in the door as seen here:

A: To determine the correct length of a mortise cylinder I use my formula:

Assuming the lock is centered in the door:

(DT-G+C1+C2)÷2

  • DT = Door Thickness
  • G = gap between to backside of the two cams
  • C1 = thickness of cylinder collar 1
  • C2 = thickness of cylinder collar 2
  • ÷2 = assuming the lock is centered in the door

    Example:

    (3.5625-.25+.125+.125)/2 = 1.78125

Therefore you would be using 1-3/4" length cylinders (rounding for the 1/32")
