Questions and Answers
Q: Hello Rich my name is Matt (removed) and I am a locksmith at (removed) University I am inquiring about a product that I can not seem to find Are you aware of a spring open hinge that would fit an ansi 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" template prep and do you have such a spring hinge that will assist opening the door? I have a 7500 Norton door closer and a cylindrical BEST 9k latch on the door now and looking to accomplish so that my spring hinge assists with my opening, and I adjust my closer high enough to close the door and latch it behind my ADA person
A: I have a 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" US26D Satin Chrome Reverse Single Acting Full Mortise Standard Weight Steel Spring Hinge as seen here:

Q: I have what might be a stupid question. Have you ever heard of using a spring open hinge to assist the closer in an ADA situation?
A: I have heard of this but the issue will be the closer getting the door to a closed position
Q: Is there a spring open hinge that is weak enough to help with opening the door, but not cause interference with the closing of a door?
A: the hinge is adjustable for spring tension - this would be the only way - but I am not optimistic you will have the desired result. Do you currently have an ADA closer
Q: yes a norton 7500DA hmm... ok maybe this is where I look like an idiot... but a 7500DA is a 7500DA, right? DA for delayed action
A: the 7500 = ADA compliant
Q: So is the Hager 1257 a spring open hinge that has adjustable tension or any other that you could recommend to try?
A: That closer is already the "lowest opening force" type closer. With a reduced opening force, you will get a reduced closing force as well. I fear, if you add a reverse action spring hinge, you will not gain any opening assist benefit and still allow the door closer to latch
Q: ok... without a closer attached I still have 5 lbs of open force, would the spring hinge not help with that?
A: absolutely - it would reduce your opening force to zero.
Q: but are you saying that would make it just that much harder on the closer to latch the door?
A: no not harder, but the door will be at 90° open and you would need to exert "force" to close the door
Q: If we have a positive latch on the door would that be bad?
A: I understand how you wish to apply this in relationship to each other I same saying this: I am all but confident this will not work as you desire. The spring hinge want to open the door and the closer wants to close the door and as a result I am simply not confident the door closer will provide substantial enough closing force to overcome the spring hinge and the latch bolt striking the strike plate in the jamb to allow you the benefit you seek (and if this is a fire rated door - I would abandon this idea immediately).
Q: would you be willing to sell us one to "experiment" with and if so Would you care to hear how it works out for us?
A: FOR SURE I would love a video as well
Q: shoot me a quote at my email address: (removed) my purchasing dept will handle this portion. - thanks for the help man keep the videos coming
A: just sent and will do - thanks

Q: Hi Richard, I've watched a couple of your videos regarding the various hager spring hinges and I'm hoping you can help me. I'm having trouble with our (20 yrs old) door hinge. The pins are missing and there is no tension on the door. My hinge does not have an allen/hex wrench mechanism and it's completely flat on top. See photos here:

I have two questions for you.... 1. I need to remove the door in order to take out my dryer & washer. How do I remove the hinge without unscrewing it from the door jam? I tried to "release" the tension and push the set pin out but it's not doing anything. 2. Second, when putting the door back I'd like to add/correct the tension. How do I know if the spring is still good and I just need to add a tension pin? OR How do I know if I need to replace the hinge all together? Any advise is much appreciated. Thanks for making the videos. I've learned a lot from them. Best, Daniela
