Questions and Answers
Q: I am looking for an extremely simple center pivot knife style hinge. One plate has a pin and an 6x1x 1/8 in strap, mounted on the floor with screws, the mating plate has a bushing, connected to an 1x6 plate, mounted into the door with screws, neither one is offset. The top and bottom assemblies are identical.I am using two 18 in doors that are flush mounted into the wall and swing into the hall, butting each other in the center, this is why no offset in the hinge arrangement. If you can supply the hinge I want two sets or 4 hinge assemblies, preferably in steel with brass bushings. Please send a picture and dimensions for the units. In addition to the cost per unit. Thanks, Mike B.
A: Questions:

If the top and bottom are identical, who will you get the hardware attached to the frame, door and floor and installed in place?

How thick are the doors?

Does your top assembly look like:

Q: Yesterday I sent a request for some center pivot hinges. You wanted the thickness of the door and it is 1 3/8" solid core masonite type door. The proposed deltana ph 60 knife type hinge will work, except it cannot have any offset, it must be straight. As the door opens/closes it cannot move out into the room, it must pivot directly off the corner that is rotating. ( It must stay in the same plane, it cannot offset in any direction)This door sets in a recess that is 1 1/2 ' deep and the size of the opening is the same as the door. the floor is hard wood and the sides, back, and top is sheetrock. the male hinges will be screwed to the floor and the top. The female hinges will be mortised and screwed into the top and bottom of the door, this hinge will be flush with the top/bottom of the unit. When the door is installed the male hinge plate will be screwed in place with the door in position to verify the exact location of the pivot pin vertically. As the door is closed, it will meet with the opposite door butt to butt. This is in a hallway and the two doors will close off the entrance into the hall. I hope this will give you the information needed to locate the proper hinge assembly. As before I need a picture, cost and availability of the hinge units. Thanks, Mike Barnes
A: 1. I am not proposing the PH60 as it does not meet your center hung criteria.

2. You stated you have a pivot currently and I am awefully curious to see this item. Please forward a photograph of the existing as well please -

3. Center hung is defined on page 4 here:

Does this definition match your needs?

Q: Your Deltana PH hinges listed are offsets; do you have or can you help me source an equivalent straight knife hinge for an overlay? I'm building a pantry unit with door shelves... Thanks, Don
A: Don - where do you want the vertical axis of pivoting to be?
Q: Thanks for the reply! Pivot should be in the center of the door thickness; so (hopefully) that the door will open clear of the case.
A: If the pivot point is in the center of the door (and not offset) hw will the door clear the casework?
Q: Question knife hinge: if installed full overlay, does it open 270 degree?
A: The hinge itself will - but only if it is an outside corner once installed.
