Questions and Answers
Q: Can this hinge be made as a reverse acting hinge ?
A: All of Bommer's single acting spring hinges can be made as reverse acting but per Bommer: "there is a 200 qty minimum"

Q: I have a question in reference to your video on "Setting Tension on Bommer LB series Spring Hinges." I believe I have two of the hinges installed on the door that goes from my laundry room to the garage. One is at the top and one at the bottom, while the middle hinge does not appear to be one that you can adjust tension, though it is still made by Bommer. Here are two photos of the setup:

The problem I have is that when some doors and windows are open in the house, along with the main garage door, the door in question with the Bommer hinges slams shut with such force that it could probably take someones fingers clean off. Obviously, this is a major concern, and I want to ask you if there is a way of adjusting those hinges to prevent this from happening? If not, is there some kind of hinge that I can install that will do the trick, and if so, do you stock it, or must I resort to a device such as a Fortstrong Door Closer Model FS-1306LITE to prevent such an accident? Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

A: I agree it is time to install a hydraulic door closer though I would recommend the Norton 1601 Multi-Size Door Closer as seen here:

and not the unit you reference.

Why?

My closer is

  • Grade 1 certified, the highest grade,, that is 1 million cycles and considered commercial duty
  • Features a 10 year warranty
  • Adjustable spring so as to allow you to tailor the spring rate of open and therefore close.
  • This closer is available with DA Delayed Action which SPECIFICALLY is intended to control the rate of close which is specifically what your application calls for.
  • Our company has been selling builders hardware for 5 generations and understand door closers.
  • Norton is a name synonymous with the invention of surface door closers.
  • Ours costs more but would agree it is superior
  • This closer is in stock and ready to ship immediately.

The closer you mention is grade 3, the lowest grade, and does not provide any clear indication of warranty for term of period, and the company does not provide contact information. I suspect they are not US based and do not have a customer service nor technical support department.

  • Q: Just to clarify a few things though... - So it appears you are saying that there is no way to keep the door from slamming by just using what I have already and I need to install the door closer? - Will the door closer that you recommend allow the door to open easily and close properly (completely and softly) or will opening it take longer because there is a hydraulic piston that one will now be pulling against? - Will I have to make any adjustments to the Boomer hinges or leave them alone the way they are currently set? In other words, how do I make sure they work properly together to get the job done correctly? - What are the door silencers for and where do I install them? Thanks again for the help. In the meantime Ill look into returning the other closer.
A: There is no way to prevent a slamming door with spring hinges and in fact spring hinges exacerbate the problem. The door closer I recommend features adjustability over the rate of close as well as the amount of force necessary to open the door. Having said this, you have an environmental issue, meaning the air pressure, and builders hardware is not propsed as a cure to the issue though I suggest it, along with the rubber bumpers (which are to be installed into a drilled hole in the face of the stop on your door frame), are suggested as a means to make the issue less dangerous (your reference to "clean off").

Regarding the existing hinges, I would, at a minimum, release the tension, and possibly consider replacing them with ball bearing hinges as recommended when using any hydraulic door closer.
