Q: Good afternoon. I am making a custom cedar door 9'4" tall by 5'3". aprox weigh will be about 400 lbs. Can I use this ABH 370 center hung hinge pivot set to placed in the exact center of the door. The door needs to spin clock wise or counter clock wise freely. 5:28:38 PM The weight of the door will be evenly distributed to the right and the left of the bottom pivot. the door should spin freely between the 2 jambs to the left or right.
For decorative purposes I would have preferred to have the tongue of equal length to the right and left of the bottom and top pivot, however I cannot find them. I guess I could put the top plate to the left and the bottom to the right. I am just trying to be symmetrical.
Ok I see. The bottom plate that screws into the floor is the one that matters and its the same dimension to the right or left. The top is the one that would be to one side but you would have took up to notice it. It will be all right. We will order this hinge with you sometime next week once our customer approves the cost. Thank you for your help.
A: Yes - The ABH is a very good choice. when you say "the tongue" do you mean the bottom arm (the arm that is mortised into the bottom of the door?.
If so keep in mind you will not see much of the top pivot and none of the bottom arm. We could always do a custom made top pivot but my guess would put the cost in the several hundred dollar range.
But you are correct, the floor portion is symmetrical and yes you would see a bit of this when the door rotates.

Q: my question is there flexibility in the pivot location.........in terms of where the pivot resides. Rich indicated a from face of jamb to vertical access. that should be a flexible number.....i may want 5 or 6 inches to to have a different pivot experience. i need them in stainless....my door thickness is 1.5" (or little too tight?) for exterior
A: There is flexibility in where the pivot resides. I have had clients successfully locate the pivot from the templated location all the way to the center of the door, do 5 or 6" in would be okay - although can you tell us the size and weight of the door first and before proceeding with installation?.
630 Satin Stainless Steel or 629 Polished Stainless Steel can be ordered.
The 1 1/2" thick door will not prove to be an obstacle to installation.

A: The majority of our pivots are made from stainless steel but we do not offer a complete non-ferrous unit.
There will be sub-components that will succumb to oxidation.

Q: I am planning on a 8' tall by 5' wide x 2" wide walnut pivot front door (exterior). The plan is to set the pivot about 15" in from the left side for a RH open. There is a porch, so no direct weather exposure. Do I need a longer pivot spindles (lower/upper/both) because of the width of the door or placement of the pivot point?
A: The strict answer is no - you would not need them, but frankly other than coast or possible conflict in the top or bottom rails of the door, I would suggest you order the pivot with extended pins / spindles. Simply put, there is more of the hardware to secure the door in the opening.

In terms of the pivot hinge, we can go with one but I was under the impression it might not work for us after working thru this whole thing. Let me review that:
o I want to make sure you are aware that this door and frame are being installed in a corridor (like a tunnel basically) with a height that just exactly fits the frame and the door in terms of height. I think this means that the door could not be lifted off or on in any way basically. I do not fully understand how the door is installed but does that pose a problem? In other words would it need to be lifted on and off with this pivot system in order to do the install?
o I see your suggested spec has an intermediate hinge. Does that have a raised barrel by chance? We were hoping not to have to mortise the frame.
o I want to make sure I am understanding how the suggested offset pivot works. In other words, does the throw of the door work just like a normal hinge with this hinge? I am asking this because once I started to understand how some of the pivots throw, I realized we would have to redesign the entire frame system we have drawn. I was definitely trying to avoid that. Our frame is made out of solid timber rather than constructed with planting stops on it.
o Finally and somewhat secondarily, I contacted both Dorma and Assa Abbloy tech in Australia and they both told me categorically they had never heard of an offset pivot that would hold these weights. My guess is this is just not accurate based on what you have sent me but the conflicting information did give me pause. It is always easier when everyone agrees! ·
There may be some design questions on the bevel issues required for this frame but we could address that later.
Sorry this has been so complicated/drawn out. We are quite keen to resolve it and make a decision now. It may be easier for us to speak person to person and I am happy to call you--- except of course we have a terrible time difference! It looks like you are on central time. A: Regarding your door height and the area you are concerned with as a problem, what is the net door height, what is the inside frame height and what is the ceiling height?

and while I would not call it a raised barrel, understanding your needs, we can agree to say this pivot will operate so as to not conflict with your frame. Please remind me again why this is a concern? Is your door inset into the frame deeper than standard?
Yes a pivot operates a door in terms of arc and opening / closing behavior as would the same door hung on hinges. What specifically are you concerned with here? Is there something I should be investigating further?
Regarding your conversation with Dorma and Assa Abloy, how heavy did you tell them your door weighed? I understood it to be in the 340 lb range.

A: My pleasure to assist. I agree that using a tool to locate the bottom point and ensuring a truly plumb vertical axis of pivoting is a great idea.
While I know you have the ABH 0370 - I have been able to determine that a. ABH does not make a quick spotting tool b. The Rixson 2604 will work for your ABH 0370 as both the ABH 0340 and the Rixson 340 top pivots have the same pin diameter.

Q: Please email me a bill of materials for the screw package for this pivot and as importantly please let me know the size of the hole required for the lead expansion anchor for the floor portion.

Q: Hi there, I'm interested in purchasing a set of pivot hinges (ABH 0370) for an interiors project. The door will be just over 3.4m high, and around 90 cm wide. The door depth will be ~11cm as it will be the same construction as a partition wall (see image attached). I'm just about to place my order, but noticed the selection required for the spindle lengths - do I need long spindles for such a tall door? Also, do you ship to the UK? Best wishes, Suzanne
A: The selection of spindle length is not necessarily related to the height of the door but more so to the condition of the flooring meaning what is the ultimate undercut that you will have from the top of the finished floor to the bottom of the door. That would be the out the initial question to answer - what is your undercut?However with tall doors it is always a good idea to have a longer top pin. Longer top pins happen to be a code requirement in California for tall doors because of the potential for earthquake where if the rectangular door opening is no longer a rectangular shape after an earthquake the top pin helps keeping the door from falling out of its opening. This may not apply to your application however. I am aware of it so I mentioned it.

Q: Rich, I saw both of your youtube videos, one on the ABH0370 center hung hinge and the other on the deltana ph60 offset hinge. They were both really good. I have a few questions that I would appreciate help with: Question 1: In the center hung case, you indicated that the doors need to have a radius. Question 2, do you need to radius the door for the offset hinge? Question 3: for both types of hinges, you need to do mortising; is the mortising substantially more for the center hung hinge? Question 4: is the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor different for the two types of hinges? Question 5: is the amount of mortising into the floor different for the two hinge types? A: Question 1. The doors do not require a radius, but in order to bring the margin between the hinge stile and the hinge jamb to a minimum, assuming a single acting door swing, you certainly would desire that stile be radiused.
Question 2. No, Offset hung such as the Deltana PH60 as seen here:

Would not call out for a radius stile on with the hinge or lock stiles.
Question 3. Both hinge types were are discussing will require not insignificant mortising, having said this, the amount of mortising does not differ greatly between the two, nor would I consider the technical skills necessary to be beyond amateur woodworking level.
Question 4 & 5. The gap is indeed different between the two and would suggest you review the technical drawings for each to determine best if this hardware will meet your final dimensional requirements.

Having said the above if the doors are double acting the PH60 is not a candidate. If the doors are single acting, either is possible to use but the door size, thickness and weight, construction and composition next need to be known.

Q: Hey Richard - I have a door with a center hung Jackson concealed overhead closer. We need to put an auto operator on it for ADA. The closer doesn't have a spring adjustment. I was thinking I'd cancel it out by throwing a continuous hinge on, but the edge is beveled so it can't be mortised. And the frame and door are not flush so it can't be surface mounted. What would you recommend doing with that closer in order to get an auto operator working without the closer spring interference? Do they make a closer like that the just acts like a pivot with no spring? Thanks for the help and always enjoy your videos!

Q: Hi, I see there are a few options with the length. Is the length options for the plate length or the pivot pin. First time using this pivot so hopefully you understand my question. Is there a return policy if the pivot doesn't work?
A: The reference to the length of the pivot pin is the top pivot only and how far that top pivot pin will penetrate into the top of the door.
You will see a correlation between the length of the top pivot pin and the duty rating of the pivot meaning the heavier the pivot is rated for in terms of a door weight, the longer that pivot pin may have to be. Also in earthquake code in California they require a very long pivot pin so that in the event of an earthquake the door will stay in the opening and not fall out or at least have a better chance of staying in the opening.

Q: Good afternoon, i am making a front entry pivot door out of steel aprox weight 300lbs 3 feet wide by 68 tall. my question is will these hinges work for the door weight? can i weld the hinges to the top and bottom jam?
A: The ABH 0370 Center Hung Pivot Set
will handle a 300 lb door as it is rated for 500 lb so long as the door is within the design width and height for the hardware. Any door size smaller than 4/0 x 8/0 would not be a problem. Regarding welding the hardware, while it is possible to do so, this would not be conducive to future maintenance or service of the door.
Q: Hi Richard, We are looking for a locking/latching mechanism to be able to install into the wall of this bar so that we dont have to modify our door too much. Attached are photos. We are going to have just a 1/4" gap between the door and the jamb in this case. Looking around on your site, it seems like there are a variety of options. Not afraid to use something powered, either. Just need to evaluate the options. You can see why we dont want to mess with the faces of this door...
