Cutting Graphic | Cutting Explained | | | | ROTARY CUT The log is mounted centrally in the lathe and turned against a razor sharp blade, like unwinding a roll of paper. Since this cut follows the log's annual growth ring, a bold variegated grain marking is produced. Rotary cut veneer is exceptionally wide. To put it simply, this is the way you peel an apple | | | | PLAIN SLICING The log, or flitch, is mounted with the heart side flat against the flitch table of the slicer and the slicing is done parallel to a line through the center of the log. This produces a variegated figure. To put it simply this is the way meat is sliced at the deli | | | QUATER SLICING The quarter log, or flitch, is mounted on the flitch table so that the growth rings of the log strike the knife at approximately right angles, producing a series of stripes, straight in some wood, varied on others | | | RIFT CUT Cut veneer is produced in the various species of Oak. Oak has medullary ray cells which radiate from the center of the log like curved spokes of a wheel. The rift or comb grain effect is obtained by cutting at an angle of 15 degree of the quarter |

Questions and Answers
Q: Thank you Richard. Hopefully we can get this one going. Do you have any other suggestions on a rotary cut face that would look elegant in a professional office? Keeping in mind we need to case and hang it as well A: That is a difficult question to answer as it is a subjective type of response. I know your client is looking at a medium type stain which will mask much of the woods natural texture, tone warmth, grain structure etc.
I am personally not a fan of staining wood whatsoever as I would be looking to select the wood type based on its natural grain structure, color and properties. Rotary cutting, akin to peeling an apple skin with a filet knife as seen here under the heading "Cutting Explained" Click Here But it is unusual to see anything orther than birch cut in the rotary fashion (although oak doors are not unheard of to be cut rotary).
You mention elegant. Since the net result of a combination of wood specie and cutting method, it is hard to know what would be elegant to the client, but when I think of elegant, rotary cutting does not come to mind regardless of the wood specie. this link here: Download File for me represents the greatest single resource for a wood door supplier, specifier or anyone who needs to become far more familiar with the specifics and I can only defer to this documents commanding representation of the subject matter. Is there a follow up question that we can perhaps attempt to answer? We take pride in our technical expertise, as we know it separates us from our competition, so don't hesitate to ask.
