Sliding Barn Doors Maximize Space and Design

September 18th, 2008

Long used on barns because of their practicality, sliding barn doors have been modernized by the design community and are found in the most up-to-date spaces including lofts, condos, hotels and offices. Sliding barn doors are a unique and effective way to divide large rooms, maximize space and create visual impact.

Design Ideas

1. For a modern, urban look, hang a sliding barn door with an exposed stainless steel track and rollers. German manufacturer MWE offers a wide spectrum of high-end, commercial-grade sliding door hardware.

2. For a classic aesthetic, conceal the track with a valance that matches the other millwork in the project. For jobs with 40 or more sliding barn doors, TruStile can source the hardware and valance (starting at $100 list).

3. Use one of TruStiles 40 unique architectural glass or resin inserts to add that factor to your sliding barn door. Consider a laminated glass pattern for applications that require privacy.

4. For spacious openings, use a pair of sliding doors so you can close off one room from another.

Especially popular for hospitality design, the popularity of the sliding barn door is driven as much by space constraints as it is by an interest in the unconventional. Due to the typical size and placement of bathrooms in hotel guest rooms, swinging doors often create wasted space and awkward openings. Like pocket doors, sliding barn doors eliminate the extra space required for a swinging door, while providing the added benefit of an eye-catching design element. Most any opening can be converted into a sliding barn door, making this door style as popular for renovations as it is for new construction.

Sliding barn doors are not just for small spaces. True to their historic namesake, these doors work well in large, open spaces and can be used to enhance a rooms functionality and character. Whether you require a spacious, open room or the cozy privacy of a closed-off suite, TruStiles barn doors provide the design flexibility to effortlessly customize your homes floor plan.

Cutting Graphic

Cutting Explained

Wood Door

Wood Door ROTARY CUT
The log is mounted centrally in the lathe and turned against a razor sharp blade, like unwinding a roll of paper. Since this cut follows the log’s annual growth ring, a bold variegated grain marking is produced. Rotary cut veneer is exceptionally wide. To put it simply, this is the way you peel an apple

Wood Door

Wood Door

Wood Door PLAIN SLICING
The log, or flitch, is mounted with the heart side flat against the flitch table of the slicer and the slicing is done parallel to a line through the center of the log. This produces a variegated figure. To put it simply this is the way meat is sliced at the deli

Wood Door

Wood Door QUATER SLICING
The quarter log, or flitch, is mounted on the flitch table so that the growth rings of the log strike the knife at approximately right angles, producing a series of stripes, straight in some wood, varied on others

Wood Door

Wood Door RIFT CUT
Cut veneer is produced in the various species of Oak. Oak has medullary ray cells which radiate from the center of the log like curved spokes of a wheel. The rift or comb grain effect is obtained by cutting at an angle of 15 degree of the quarter
